Josh Pasner just signed a contract extension with Memphis. Good coach, but excellent recruiter. He was rumored to be headed to UCLA or USC. I think Buzz needs to sign an extension.  That will kill all rumors of him heading elsewhere.  Until then, Buzz Williams to Minnesota, UCLA or heck even Wisconsin is what I'm gonna believe!!

Maybe, but these extensions are meaningless.

For example, Tubby just got an extension last year.

If a coach wants to leave, even if it's just a week after signing an extension, a long contract will not stop him from leaving. And the school won't stop him from leaving, either, because schools don't want somebody who doesn't want to be there.

It's all for show.

Buzz has an automatic rollover contract.  So that's not an issue.  More about other things.

Niv Berkowitz

He's do e this already. He's paid hansomy. MU is still in the tourney so, when u expect this I have no idea.

And lastly...It still won't kill the rumors!!! I will stop them for this off season only. After that business as usual.

esotericmindguy

Isn't he signed for 5 more years? how long do you need to extend him?

Tugg Speedman

Buzz has gotten a raise every year.

Also he already has a longer contract than everyone right now, a permanent rolling 6 years contract.  Every year it renews for another six years.  It never ends.

OK then, extend it so it never, ever, ever ever ends! See the difference?!?!?!?

The Process

And here I was hoping for a thread on hair extensions for Buzz. ?-(
Relax. Respect the Process.

Buzz probably has ~2 schools in his mind that he would seriously consider leaving for as long as things at MU are going well (as they are now).  I imagine the only person who knows that list is his wife.  And if it happens to be Texas I couldn't hold a grudge against him for leaving because it would be what his wanted and a good move for his family.  I am sure that if Buzz ever left it would be in dramatically different fashion than Crean.

Until that moment comes, if it ever does, I'm not going to worry about it at all.  Let's get to the Elite 8.

If Buzz signed an extension and then left after two years for a school like Indiana, then I have no problems.

If he signs one and then we go through this again next like with the likes of Minnesota, then I won't be happy with our coach.

I probably haven't followed these rumors as closely as some, but what has Buzz done that is making us "go through this ... with the likes of Minnesota"? Is Buzz doing something to stoke the rumors?

Buzz might sign a 100-year extension and say 50 times a day that he is staying at Marquette for life, but that wouldn't necessarily stop rumors, would it?

I won't even worry about it then. Hyman Roth said it best..."This is the business we've chosen."

If you choose to be a fan of a sport or a team, player and coach movement is part of it, and there isn't a damn thing you're going to do about it. Enjoy it for what it is, and worry about things you can control.

No that is a fair point MU82.  He isn't doing anything to stoke the rumors, but if he signs a big extension, I think he should be very strong in his verbal support of the University.  You don't hear rumors about a lot of coaches because of that.  I mean, how come JT3 is never mentioned?

bilsu

I do not think Buzz is going anywhere, but I have to protect myself. I will wait to just before April 30th to make my Blue & Gold fund donation for reseating.

I hear ya, and that certainly is the case with many coaches. But ...

Donovan gets mentioned every single year at this time -- as if Florida is some pit-stop job -- even though he is basically signed for life. Shaka and Stevens are mentioned nonstop and they signed long extensions. Izzo seems to get mentioned seriously for an NBA job every year or two and he likely will be at Michigan State forever. Etc, etc, etc.

So what you are saying is that good coaches are usually mentioned when there are high profile openings.   Weird.    Buzz has a rolling extension already.    He is compensated extremely well already.    I don't see him leaving for either of the current big jobs.    But stranger things have happened.

The issue with Buzz certainly isn't compensation...although we all want more money.  Right now, MU really supports its program well.  Travel via charter is a non-issue.  We outbid Illinois for an assistant coach.  The issue with Buzz is his supposed relationship with MU's administration.  Signing an extension, even if it is for a slight increase, shows everyone that that relationship is solid...may not be best friends, but solid enough for a strong working relationship.

I think outbidding for top assistants and knowing MU will pay to attract those top assistants reinforced to Buzz how much he is wanted here. He wanted an assistant and MU made it happen with no care for the cost.

Agreed. Same with Wright. And I don't remember hearing them reinforce their loyalty every time. It's just more annoying that whenever Buzz gets mentioned it seems everyone picks up and runs with it much more aggressively than the others.
