Apparently, both Smart and Stevens have no interest in coaching UCLA (How can this be? I thought that UCLA was so amazing and they always got who they wanted. ::)).

Anyway, the rumor is they're looking closely at Mark Gottfried. Works for me.

Gottfried is a Harbaugh cousin

Should we be insulted they blew off Buzz?  Is he not good enough?

So they fire a guy for not making it out of the round of 64 with a team that had huge expectations and replace him with a guy who didn't make it our of the round of 64 with a team that had huge expectations?  Ok
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Yeah...and 99% of the athletic directors out there would likely say the guy fired was a better coach too.  Very odd.

Large buyout will make it tough.

@GoodmanCBS: And, as @ESPNAndyKatz just tweeted, Mark Gottfried has a huge buyout an N.C. State. Would be tough to justify also at UCLA right now.

I assume UCLA is looking for someone to clean up the program (again). If you read last year's SI article, it's pretty messy in Westwood.

Well, any decent coach is going to have a significant buyout.

What other coaches do we know of that reportedly have a huge buyout? Hmmm.
Really, though, if everybody wants it to happen badly enough, a buyout won't stand in the way.

Your logic is sound but you forget that Gottfried is a blood relation of the Harbaughs.

Katz tweeted $3.5M. Not material, but I think the Gottfried buyout is actually $3.75M (per agreement IIRC: $750k current Annual Salary, as defined, X 5 remaining years on contract = $3.75M)

Will be interesting to see what UCLA does. They've already paid Howland to go away...and they're not known for shelling out big bucks. At least that's always been their reputation. Have things changed much since Larry Brown? I remember that was a huge issue for him.

NavinRJohnson

I think Gottfroed is a great choice.

Considering what's been done by adidas, anyone other then Howland would be that "someone" to clean it up.

That's what boosters are for...if they want him and he's happy with Westwood, the boosters will make it happen.
