New basketball tourney slated for Milwaukee
The Business Journal of Milwaukee - 3:06 PM CDT Tuesday, September 11, 2007

A new basketball tournament featuring four traditionally all-black colleges will play in Milwaukee during Thanksgiving weekend.

The "Fresh Coast Basketball Classic," using a term dubbed by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, will be held in Milwaukee Nov. 23-24. It will feature a matchup of Dillard University, of Louisiana; Langston University, of Oklahoma; Lane College, of Tennessee; and Central State, of Ohio.

Harley-Davidson Inc. and Manpower Inc. are the primary sponsors of the event. The event will be held at the Midwest Airlines Center and the U.S. Cellular Arena in downtown Milwaukee. It will include other entertainment and events, such as a slam dunk contest, a college recruitment fair and a career fair for young people.

So what is the mayor referring to?

🏀

Fresh Coast? There is nothing fresh about the smell coming off the lake in Milwaukee.

Barrett is trying to persuade the media and opinion makers to re-brand the cities in the "rust belt" as "the fresh coast."  Fresh water coast (Great Lakes) areas such as Green Bay, Milwaukee, Chicago, Gary, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, etc.  IMO it will take a heck of a lot more than this tournament to do it.

Thanks Sir Lawrence.

That is an interesting take on things. I agree with you it will take more then basketball to do that.

Never heard the term "fresh coast"... but it's kinda cool.

Not sure if it will ever catch on nationally... but still it's not bad... and the great lakes all have some nice major cities (Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, etc.) and some beautiful secondary cities/areas (Manatowoc, Makinac, Duluth MN, Put-in-Bay, etc.).

I guess my question is why couldn't Harley and Manpower step up and put some money into a Milwaukee tournament that would have MU, UWM, and 2 other higher profile teams.  If there is better money behind the tournament, it would have been easier to draw some bigger names and tourn the Blue & Gold into a true classic.

This one is all about connecting the dots.  Mayor Barrett and the City of Milwaukee give monetary incentives/tax breaks to both Harley-Davidson and Manpower to stay in Milwaukee, or in Manpower's case, relocate from a suburb to downtown Milwaukee.  Then the Mayor and one of his aldermen come up with this tournament idea, that will generate little interest among most local college basketball fans, but could possibly create some buzz in the African-American community.  In order to make it happen, however, the City needs sponsorship  $$$, so what does hizzoner do?  He hits on the CEOs of both company's to cowboy up sponsorship dough.  Both H-D and Manpower are very willing participants because they are actually both invested in obtaining qualified employees in the city, which boils down to better educated employees.  AND, they both owe Mayor Barrett.   A match made in City politics.

I've already donated way more than $5 to Al's Run, just not through MU Scoop.

We get it.  Lots of people have donated to Al's Run through many sources, and we are grateful of them all.

right, but when the admins posts lists of posters and single out those that haven't donated, it can piss people off, myself included.

Point taken, sorry. .. it's one of those deals .. the forum is read by about 1500 (reg and non-registered) people each day .. we're just trying to get a larger fraction involved.

Rocky probably should have posted 200 people so as not to single out just the top 10.  Next year, we'll make sure we don't step on toes.

1.  Having re-read my post last night, I will admit it wasn't worth $5 anyway.

2.  I didn't intend to call out anyone specifically, but see how it could be (and was) interpreted that way.

3.  I am thankful to mutpm for giving to Al's Run in any capacity.

I didn't catch that "Fresh Coast" was referring to "fresh water." Makes sense, I guess. I thought it meant fresh as in "new." People from the coasts, especially the West Coast, have NO IDEA how massive the Great Lakes are. They think it's just some lakes where people water ski and stuff. Put together they are basically a massive sea.

OT: It was really cool to see people from across the political spectrum oppose BP Amoco's plans to increase the production of waste they put into Lake Michigan and got them to back down. No one likes pollution.
