Lockett and otule were about the only thing we had going on for the first 10 minutes

Dude shot 28% and had 5 points.  He's a waste on O.

I forgot, only video game offensive numbers are acceptable (he shot the team average 28%).  Forget things like defense and rebounding (which he had 11).
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

He had 11 rebounds you know.  There's more to the game than scoring.

Can't play D?

Were you watching the same game I was?  He can't close out, 2 stupid fouls when Davidson was going away from the basket, etc.  There is a reason he wasn't in in the final 5 minutes and it wasn't because he can't shoot.

This is supported by the Paint Touches article talking about PPP per player.  Mayo was low on the list, which I found shocking, but it make sense.  Also, the argument that mayo isn't a waste on O (just to argue the converse of Lockett)... dude had a Club trillion line today!!!

I love you, but...

Vander, Jr, Jamil, Davante, Otule, Lockett and Taylor. Those are your guys; no more experimentation. We need our best lineups in at all times.
You are absolutely correct Sir! I brought this up earlier in the year and caught boatloads of crap about it.  Also, JWilson needs to start.

Defensive metrics are a waste of time.    Mayo gives offense and shooting Lockett can't produce which this team needs.   We struggled to produce O against man to man Davidson we need Mayo's shooting if we're going to go far.

Seriously?  Basketball 101.

He's a good shooter.  Keeps a defender occupied on the ball side, and if his defender does collapse, you have a good shooter available.

Keep banging on Buzz though.
Thank you. Anybody questioning having a shooter in there to spread the floor is an idiot. By the way, D Wilson did a great job during his minutes. He was in to disrupt Dacidson's guards and help on their bigger guys when they floated out for 3. I can't see how anybody could question coaching in this game! We played really well...just couldn't make any shots. It's the story of the year. We just beat a really good team and people are complaining? Good Lord!!

muwarrior97

Sure alot of Coach-of-the-year candidates on year JEEEEEEEZZZZ!!!! This board would have imploded had they lost.

Buzz has been coaching the same way all year, keep winning and advancing...Thank you Marquette

My eyes > defensive metrics.  He was playing crap D the whole game.

Mayo hasn't given much offense lately and his help defense has been terrible.  He does fine keeping his guy in front of him, but within the team concept, is constantly lost.

OTOH, Lockett had 11 rebounds.  As many as Otule.

Couldn't disagree more. Lockett shoots a higher percentage from the field and also gives us excellent rebounding and defense. Mayo hasnt been playing well for over a month or two so it did not make sense to put him in there at all. His defense has been a liability lately. Trent isnt a sexy player, but he does so many little things well, (his hustle on loose balls today was fantastic) something we need this time of the year.

Lockett held the guys he was guarding to 9/28 shooting.  That's just fine defensively.

The only problem with your theory is that Mayo isn't a good shooter.

Other than that, you're spot on.

Here is Todd compared to Dwight Buycks and Lockett, neither of which would ever be considered a "shooter".

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?add=trent-lockett&p1=dwight-buycks&p2=todd-mayo

Todd has talent, but he's streaky, inefficient and not the "shooter" that everybody thinks. He's just not.

Today was a very odd lineup display.  Still don't understand why Thomas is in with 6 seconds left and we are down 1.  A lot of bad lineups today.  Miracle win...survive and advance.

I'll admit to not being clear on all substitution rules.

Would Buzz have been allowed to remove any player in that situation after the turnover given there was no timeout?

Either way, i think the reason Buzz had Jake in was smart. The play was going to be strictly for Vander to create a shot for himself as happened vs St. John's and thus Buzz wanted Davidson defenders to not leave their man and help on Blue. So if i'm Davidson, i'd fear a kick out jumper to Thomas as much or more than anyone besides Jamil Wilson.

MUFC9295

Until anyone else is coach, I'll go with Buzz's way.  He's got us here.  He can make any call he wants.   Those here... You can opine, but you cannot out coach Buzz.

GGGG

I will also say that on another board (not Scout) a former coach (not Murf) pretty much praised Buzz's rotation saying that going 11 deep is likely why they had the legs in the end of that game and Davidson's short bench likely made them physically and mentally tired.

I am not sure why posters and pseudo coaches like Chicos want us to go away from the "crazy lineups" that lead to a BE conference championship and a 3 seed despite all expectations otherwise.

During consistent pt last year mayo was our second leading scorer of returning guys after Vander Blue at 8 pts a game.  Shot a better pct as a freshman than blue.  Kid has shown he can get hot and specifically in the NCAA tourney, last year.  Need his shot to step up or it will be rough tomorrow.  Lockett was in Derrick Wilson territory yesterday with the ball.  Pretty disappointing for a senior.  Hopefully he steps it up too.

Last year was last year, and he was wildly inconsistent last year as well.  Mayo hasn't done much this year on either end of the floor to merit more playing time.  Lockett had 11 rebounds, no turnovers in 38 minutes, and according to Buzz held the players he is guarding to 9/28 shooting.  If you watch the press conference from yesterday, when he was asked about Lockett, Buzz's reaction tells you all you need to know about his satisfaction with Trent's play.  And the relative minutes by Mayo and Lockett reinforce who he trusts in at this point of the season.

I think Otule and Lockett are guys whose contributions are better than they look.  They are both often very frustrating to watch.  Otule because he turns the ball over with poor footwork and so-so hands when he has the ball at point blank range and Lockett for his turnovers and because he gets himself into the lane and in good spots so often but doesn't turn those great opportunities into points as much as he should.

OTOH, they both do a lot of things that really help, like Otule occupying multiple defenders clearing driving lanes and rebounding lanes for his teammates and clogging the middle on defense.  Or Lockett playing good D or getting a hustle rebound or steal.

I can honestly see how anyone can like or dislike both of their games.
