Honestly, wasn't this a point you could have addressed in a PM?  Honestly, I don't think the whole board needs to read this.
You are obviously a smart guy--just wondering why you would say, much less type, honestly so often--or at all.

no, that would be Apollo 12.  cool kids call that "The Prequel."

This name will be a mistake when they don't have 12 in year 2.  Why would any conference starting today have a number in its name?

If the B10s goal is to get more $$ from the BTN in the NYC area, having both Rutgers and UConn can't hurt.

And you could argue that UConns football team has been more successful recently than either Rutgers or Maryland.

Not having the basketball conference tournament in NYC is going to kill a ton of people (UConn fans) around here.  I know people already ticked off that they can't take one more train ride into NYC to go and see UConn play in the BET, thanks to that post-season ban.  I know of others who for years always take one day-off to attend the BET and hopefully see UConn play.

AAU is not important because some people here have never heard of it.

AAU matters... right up until it doesn't matter.

If/When the Big10 decides it can make more money taking (insert school) who isn't AAU... they will do it.

$.$.$.$.$.

We know they are whores. They just need to see the right $.

+1

I can't believe they would put a 12 in the name, given the likelihood their membership will change in the next few years.

If AAU were important, why did Nebraska get an invite to the Big 10?

They were in the AAU when they got the invite...they were kicked out later.

The better question is if it is so important, why did ND get an B10 invite?

What's the alternative? "Big America," "American Conference," ?

Just to be clear, AAU IS important.

It's just not as important as...

$

The Big10's mission statement is now: Build the strongest sports division/network that generates the most $.

That's it. Everything else is just window dressing.

T-Bone

Why put a number behind the name?  There are so many conferences out there inaccurately named - yeah, yeah, yeah, points to history, blah.  It's ugly and stinks of wanabee nature.

I am thrilled we're paying for the Big East name.
Sure rebranding may take some time, but all the shitball ideas out there for conference names.   I cringe thinking of what it could of been.
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.

Seriously, I was waiting to get down to the last post so I could write the same thing.  With the way conference memberships are bouncing all over the place it seems really short-sighted to include a number in the name.  Might eventually become the America 12 +2 -1 -2 +3 League.

Seriously, I think you go around all day trying to find ways to instigate things on the internet.  If you would remember my argument.  I said it was not important to academics (only University Presidents) and not because I hadn't heard of it ( I am an academic), but because the vast majority of my peers (academics) have not heard of it either.

When you point out what AAU stands for the general response is oh, yeah, no one cares about that.

If Marquette still was associated with Medical College of Wisconsin, they would be eligible for the AAU.  Does that suddenly make them more prestigious???

As to the number 12...they could just make it the "Baker's Dozen"...plus or minus around the 12.

They can have divisions like "First to go" and "Leaving Next"

Not to mention that IU is pretty much followed by the entire state just as UW sports are followed by a few people who live outside of Madison.

This is assuming we forget about the other NINE D1 programs in Indiana. An incredible number compared to WI. IU no doubt is THE hoops program in Indiana, but to say IU is the be all end all is a slap to Butler, Purdue, Notre Dame....i'm out of breath. I wish WI college hoops held a candle to IN, unfortunately that is not the case.

CTWarrior

Why not just call it the National Collegiate Conference?  NCC is short and would catch on.

You mean somebody in South Bend (no less the rest of the state) actually cares about Notre Dame basketball?
