Gonzaga virtual No. 1
« on: February 26, 2013, 08:23:40 PM »
Gonzaga is at BYU Thursday and home against Portland Saturday.  Win both and no. 1 next week.

Get them in the C7!  But them a plane.

I don't think this loss drops IU from #1.   Conference road loss to a high RPI team desperate for a win to cement their tourney bid.   No shame in that.

It's writers that vote and they would love for a non power conference team to be no. 1.  So they will make it happen.

Its sad, the Zags really dont have a schedule and resume of a #1 team. They got their because of their weak competition and everyone ahead of them losing, to much much better competition. Their best wins are @OKST and vs KSU (neutral). I mean, really???

Are you saying that Gonzaga is the Notre Dame of basketball?

Who cares who the #1 ranked team is before the tourney...doesn't mean they'll win it.

When we are ranked #1 next year I'll remind you that you do not care.

Don't get me wrong, having #1 next to your name is big, but the only time it matters to me is when it's the last poll of the season after the tourney.

Watched them play at San Diego and was not impressed. Two 7 footers that nobody in their league can match and they barely won. The wouldn't fare well in the BEAST

Yeah I'd like to see those guys do to Syracuse what Gardner and Otule did.

Disagree.  IU has lost twice in the last 3 weeks... to unranked teams.  They just don't deserve it.  It will be either Gonzaga or Duke.

And Indiana has made a habit of beating elite level teams away from home (Hoyas, Buckeyes, Sparty). They have a great record outside Bloomington which makes them a great team.

Agree. IU is still the best team I have seen this year. Two lottery picks with more than 150 games total under their belt, a bunch of shooters with tons of experience and a MCD AA point guard. Still get a little confused late if you can keep it close though.

You've only watched them once?

I think Indiana and Gonzaga are the only teams in the country this season that have all the tools to be a complete team. Whether they can put it together six times next month is unknown given the way this season has played out.

How many times does IU get that benefit of the doubt that I really can't remember any #1 team getting ever before.  No same in being #3 either, but when #1 loses they drop.

I have watched them on TV but was in person for SD game. Who have they beaten that they should be No.1?   Way over rated  and more athletic teams will have their way with them.

I'd also want to know who the 8/9 are...I have very little faith in teams that haven't been challenged in months suddenly being in tournament form as a top seed.

Maybe, but the rankings aren't "fair" -- they are a measure of week-to-week movement.

Gonzaga has done exactly what they are supposed to do. If IU beats up on a few schools next week, they'll reclaim the top spot. But, they lost. That should come with a commensurate drop in ranking.

That said, I had this argument somewhere else: If IU wasn't the preseason #1, do you think they'd have worked their way there anyway? It seems to me that it's pretty hard to break into the top 25, and once you're past the 20-25 bubble, pretty hard to get kicked out. Starting at #1 would give a lot of latitude to screw up :)

Aren't the zags this year's version of Murray State?
