My challenge to Vander Blue

Written by: Mark Strotman

When Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder left Marquette last spring, it left a void both in the leadership and scoring departments. For the first time in Buzz Williams' tenure, there was no returning player with the accolades and experience to ... Continue reading →

I agree VB needs to step it up in last ten minutes of game. That said, he has sealed a couple W's with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. His shooting % is somewhat misleading because how many last second in shot clock three's has he been forced into? I get very frustrated not seeing the ball in his hands more late in the game. If he wants to be an elite college player the last ten minutes are very important.

The analysis does a good job of translating the vague notion of "clutch" into quantifiable production. Shows just how lucky we've been with Jimmy and Jae.

It'd be nice to see Jamil run more hi-low with Gardner late in games when we really need a bucket.

Vander needs to take less 3 point shots and drive and pull up for shorter jumpers.  He is unstoppable when he does that.

Hi-Lo sans long distance bounce passes.

There have been similar ideas to this posted on the Jamil Wilson thread.

Every year since Buzz has been coach a player, or two, has really stepped up the following year to make up for the loss of the seniors. This year, besides the horrible shooting, we keep hoping that one of these guys will finally step up and say this is my team, I want the ball, and I am going to make the shots to carry us.

Hopefully Vander decides to step it up down the stretch but when you get this late in the season I don't really see the team suddenly getting this leader that we have lacked.
