was watching the buzz show and they asked one of the players who handles boot camp the best...i forgot who the player was but he responded that it was definitely vander...and made a comment about how impressive his physical conditioning is.  i'm thinking that all happened by not working hard and trying to be cute.

Can we all just admit that our expectations were too high for Vander coming in. There has been senior leadership on this team since he got here (Butler Freshman year, DJO and Jae last year) and now that a lot of that is gone he is finally stepping up.

Yeah, our expectations for Vander were kind of high when he came in as a 5 star recruit, but you know what? We don't get to the S16 these last two years without his contributions. We aren't 3-0 in the Big East right now without him. He's matured a lot as a player and off the court and I think we're fortunate to have him.

Which brings us back to a fundamental truth we all need to remember for next year.   It is rare for a freshman to come in as a complete player and have a huge immediate impact.   Unless Calipari snags them.     Blue has progressed, he has gotten better.    That is more typical than what we got from the amigos.    Remember this next year when the freshmen are struggling. (I said 'when', not 'if')

You guys, Vander was never a BAD player, but if you weren't frustrated by his ability to get to the rim and then beef the layup I don't know what to say to you about his first 2 years. The kid couldn't shoot. This his first year with an eFG% over 43% (which is not good). It is 51% this year, which is good. Vander was a bad offensive player before this year, which was frustrating because we can see the talent he has on that end. He has become an efficient offensive player this year and is fulfilling the promise of those lofty rankings on the scoring end of the court, finally. So he wasn't DJ his freshman year, and we were disappointed. He's good now, so thats why you may see less "haters."

I have no doubt that every single player on this team works as hard or harder than every one in D-1 ball, but a nose for the bucket just is there or it isn't until it clicks. Gardner had that nose in year 1. It took blue a while, but he's much better now.

I think a large part of this has to do with the fact that Vander was the highest ranked recruit in Marquette's history, if I'm not mistaken. Nobody had even heard of Gardner prior to when we signed him.

Bernard Toone was ranked second in the country when he committed to MU.  Highest ranked that there's been been, and probably ever will be.
