ESPN insider article

"Marquette recruit compares to Shumpert'
By Dave Telep

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- "ESPN 100 shooting guard and Marquette signee JaJuan Johnson (Memphis/Southwind), who's played well this week at the City of Palms Classic, strikes me as a guy who doesn't come into college with the headlining hype but quickly catches his peers.

Let's not forget his uncle is NBA player Louis Williams. Most of the highly regarded shooting guards in the 2013 class don't own the frame, athleticism and length that's been given to Johnson.

I recall watching current New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert in high school, and there's a reasonable comparison to be made. Shumpert has more lead guard in him, but they have similar body styles and both are ball-hawking defensive players. Sorry, Marquette fans, I do recall the Golden Eagles being a whisker away from landing Shumpert. The good news is that Johnson is on the way.

In each class there's always kids who have physical advantages but their bodies and games haven't come together in unison. They magically find their college weight room, listen to their college coach and voila -- a big-time player emerges. Happens every year.

The trick is to recognize the guys and take a chance on them from a rankings perspective. Others will have more established resumes and bigger names, but my gut says this kid closes the gap quickly. He picked a college program founded in playing hard, and he's already there. The next step is polishing up his offense and patiently waiting as the pieces come together."

Iman Shumpert, the whale that broke Crean's back.

Yeah, wasn't the loss of Shumpert what many people think got Crean thinking he needed to leave?

Correct?

I went to HS with Shump used to do Blacks Bootcamp with him, it broke my heart when he told me he was leaning toward GT.  But glad to see Johnson getting that praise but he is no Shump, OPRF pride for life! (If any fenwick people here go to hell haha)
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Merry Christmas, Husky Boy. Tough loss this year, eh?  ;D

Yeah, Crean threw the house at him.

I'd say Embiid is more akin to Shumpert in the recruiting effort/reward department

Why, was Buzz outside his crib in a limo at midnight?

It's probably the best comparsion, but Crean was levels above Buzz for Shumpert.

I'm not so sure about that. Buzz must have went in on a timeshare near Gainesville with the amount of time he spent at The Rock.

-__- Merry Christmas Friar... We may have lost this year but Iman Shumpert > Corey Maggette
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Golden Avalanche

This is a pleasant surprise. Didn't know Johnson had the defensive aspect to his game as all anyone writes about is his ability to shoot.

Looking forward to seeing an improvement next year on perimeter defense, though with the low bar being set this year it may not be asking much.

GoldenZebra

If JJJ turns out to be somewhat close to this comparison, heck. yes.

strotty

You'll know he's really the real deal when services begin spelling and punctuating his name correctly.

In other news, who the hell is Dave Telep?

Just one of the more respected national recruiting analysts out there.

But, to me he's kind of a tool.
