Some of the comments are hilarious.  Big Priest Conference, the Big Easter, The 12 Apostles and the first one to leave is Judas...I'm dying here, hopefully if they have to make their own brand it's this memorable.

Marquette leaving the Big East to form a new basketball-centric league is a done deal.

The annoucement could come as early as Friday.

The Golden Eagles will join six other Big East defectors - Georgetown, Seton Hall, Villanova, DePaul, St. Johns and Providence - along with Butler and Xavier of the Atlantic 10. A 10th team could be St. Louis, Creighton, Dayton or Virginia Commonwealth. Or the league could have 12 teams.

The league will have a decent TV contract and a rotating tourmanent site, but it doesn't have a name.

If the Big East folds, the new schools would like to retain the name.

I don't like the idea of having the number of schools in the conference name.  It's proven to be short-sighted.

I think the C7 need to make the move to keep the name Big East.  As a bball focus conference, just like in 1979, when the Big East was founded on bball.  The $ and branding is huge.  They should do everything they can to keep it. IMO

I think the name of the conference should be Basketball.

I also think the conference tournament should be held in the open air on a beach in Miami-but that's a discussion for a different day.

Do people want to use a number in the conference?  A size adjective ("Big")?  A geographic descriptor (East, Pacific, Atlantic)?  Do you get away from the traditional conference names and do something else like Premier League, Urban League (LOL), etc.

Small
Urban
Private
Catholic (though Butler, VCU or others would change this)
Old institutions
Strong traditions
Solid academics

I agree with Chicos. Don't put a number in the conference. Also, don't tie yourself down to geographic locations such as east, northern, midwest etc. Leave room for future expansion coast to coast if need be. Don't use the word "Big" - it's over used and unoriginal. But still use a word that conveys the conference's intention to become the premier basketball conference in America. Don't use "Catholic" because it's too confining, but still use a word that conveys the feel of private christian universities.

So, after going over countless combinations of words that embody these characteristics, here is my suggestion...

The American Parochial Elite conference - the APE!

If you can't be the BEAST, be the APE!
