I have a bit of an obsession with interesting  or colorful names, and I can't help but notice that NCAA basketball teams have more than their share.  As you recall, Vander Blue came in second in a running poll for the coolest named player in the tournament last year:

proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/polling?event_id=4766

The winner was NC State's Staats Battle.  He was a walk-on, so I'm not even sure if he should have been eligible, but moving on....

I thought it would be fun to have a running contest of the coolest-named opposing player as we go up against each team.  After each game, we put up the current leader against a few guys from our most recent opponent.

Whoever is left standing after our last game (NCAA championship, natch), will be the winner.
Have some patience, FFS.

chapman

A few nice names on the list, but since Burnatowski beat the crap out of our guys I'll give him my vote.

warriorchick

And who woulda thunk that there would ever be another dude name Lazar playing at the BC?  Is that a common first name in Serbia?
Have some patience, FFS.

If Mitch's name was Rick, he would have garnered my vote...however, I went with "The Murphski"

romey

I went with Murph too.  Too bad it isn't Damon Sherman-Newman.  The triple "man" would have been nice.  And what's with all the hyphenated last names over the past 5-10 years?

Danged feminists.

They ran out of room for his name on the BC scoreboard last night.  It displayed as "Sherman-Newsome, Dam"

Gotta be Murphy Burnatowski. How can I not love another Mick Polock like myself?

How about if his first name was Royce?

I needed to keep the list down to a reasonable number, so unfortunately, I had to leave off Colgate bench-rider Stosh O'Callahan

As a fellow Mick/Eastern Euopean (Hungarian), I agree.  Not only that, the kid can play.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

There was also a kid on Colgate named Chad Johnson. Now, its not necessarily a unique mane but some of us in the student section did enjoy chanting "Ocho-Cinco" when he went to the free-throw line.

MUfan12

It's a good thing the early 2000's TCU teams aren't eligible, or this thing would be over.

I doubt we ever played Pacific during his years there, but I'd have to say my all time favorite is... wait for it...

Have impulse control issues, 69?

At least you didn't dip into the BEast yet.  The best conference for names, hands down.

Just ask God'sGift Achiuwa.

Had to go with Mitch Rolls... probably because I've had a craving for sushi the past few days, and even a "mitch roll" sounds half-way appetizing right now.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

You went too far.  Tuesday's opponent Southeastern Louisiana has a Forward named Onochie Ochie.

That will be hard to beat.  However, if there is a team prize I think it has to go to St. John's.  Three of their player's have an apostrophe in their first name.  That's tough to pull off.

GGGG

To the surprise of no one, Wisconsin has the most "vanilla" names on its roster.

Rudy

Damon actually showed up as "Dam" all night in the scoreboard, so that's how he got my vote.
