Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I think we should erect a Crean statue, outside the Al, for pigeons to perch on.

Each and every day, the sun comes up and 4ever bashes Crean.

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Crean "outdoorsy?" Even his most fervent supporters must realize how absurd that is. This is a guy who pisses sitting down for chrissakes! Thank God, DWade was so misguided.

Wasn't like D Wade had a lot of options - because of his ACTs it was MU or Illinois St. Even during the near apocalyptic Dukiet years Marquette was miles ahead of Illinois St as a program.

It's a weird description, but whatever Crean is selling, Wade was/is buying.

They have remained close for a long time, and Wade doesn't really need Crean.

Gotta assume his IU shorts are comped.

Whether it's his high school, his high school coach, his community or TC - Wade is, and consistently has been, a very loyal guy. Good for him. But let's not kid ourselves - Wade never "really needed" Crean.  With or without him, Dwyane would be one of the greatest players on the planet. Where TC would be if DW had managed an 18 on his ACT? Now, there's an interesting question.

Coaching at a Conference USA "power" in Wisconsin?

I wonder, though: if Wade doesn't come to MU, he probably doesn't go to the Final Four in 2003 (and doesn't have the sublime triple-double against UK in the regional finals), and his star might not be as bright going into the NBA draft.

Maybe?

Coaching at a middle of the pack Big East team in Wisconsin?

Do you have UW-Milwaukee joining the Big East in your hypothetical?

Obviously Dwyane is a supremely gifted athlete. But, he himself has said that he needed Crean at different points in his life.

From the book excerpt:

QuoteWade says the third and final time he took the ACT, the score was lower than the other two. He cried when he told Crean about the third score. Crean cried too. Twice in fact.

"At last I heard him take a determined breath," Wade writes. "His energy and tone changed. Now he was the coach, making a call after a tough loss. 'Look, here's what we're going to do. You're coming here and we'll stay with everything as planned. The only difference is you won't be able to play in the games or travel. But you'll do everything else. You're on the team."

Crean "emerged as the father figure I needed at the time," Wade says.

But Crean was demanding.

"At different points, he pushed so hard I was seriously ready to go home," Wade writes. "Then, of course, I realized there was nuthin' to go home to. But that didn't change the backing vocal track inside my head – This man is crazy!"

Wade recalls his awkwardness at a practice before the start of the 2001 season when he told Crean about Siohvaughn's pregnancy.

" 'Whatever happens, whatever you decide, I'm here and we'll get through this together,' " Crean told Wade. "Didn't tell me what to do or how to do it. Just that he'd be there to go through it with me."

I don't think Crean is a saint or anything, but give credit where credit is due. He's appears to have developed a strong relationship with Dwyane and helped him throughout his life. That has to count for something.

PS I know he's too tan. I know his ties are too long. I know his haircut sucks. I know he drinks too much pepsi, etc. etc. etc.

Developing and nurturing a strong relationship with a player who was the difference between a mixed result, uncertain outcome career at MU and enough success to get a HC gig at a blueblood seems pretty elementary. If you can cite his still strong relationships with MU secretaries or his walk ons I'll be much more impressed.

PS The tan, the tie, the haircut and the diet drinks aren't really what people find distasteful about TC. They're merely little digs about a person some find distasteful.

TC certainly was there for Wade when his girlfriend got pregnant, when it was time to decide whether to go pro, and probably when dealing with other on and off the court issues during (maybe even after) Dwyane's time at MU. When I spoke of "needing" him, I meant from a strictly basketball standpoint.

It's hard to compartmentalize life like that though.  Maybe without Crean his personal issues (ACT, pregnancy, etc.) simply overwhelm him and he never ends up sticking with basketball.

Sort of like when Crean stood by 4ever, helped him through life's travails until 4ever was ready to show his stuff as a poster on MUScoop.

When there was one set of ATV tracks in the sand, that's when Crean was carrying him.
