http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/59720/coaches-corner-marquettes-buzz-williams

I like this quote:  "I think it’s so remarkable that we’ve been able to keep our core group together over the last four years. I’m extremely humbled that we have an institution that’s been committed to helping our program have the stability that it’s had."

And this one:  "I think Steve Taylor is really, really good. In his high school career, his record was 95-4 (at Chicago’s Simeon Career Academy). He won three consecutive state championships. He’s gained 42 pounds since he signed a national letter of intent with us. I think he’s a really, really good player. And I think he’s an even better person. We still have one scholarship available. We may sign somebody else before we get to the fall. Who are the guys going to be? I don’t know. But no one knew it was going to be D.J. or Jae last year."

If he keeps gaining at this rate, can we call him Godzilla soon?

Measured 6'8.5 (in shoes) 208 lbs, with a 6'11 wingspan at the 2011 LeBron James Skills Academy.

I think Buzz misspoke this was from last summer which was 3 months before the LOI.  I have a hard time believing he is 250 at this point.  But the fact that he might be 220-230 in encouraging.

Curious, though, that he didn't mention Mayo at all when responding about his upcoming season.  Mentions Vander, Junior, Gardner, Otule, Jamil and Lockett, but no Mayo.

Awesome interview, and this response, particularly the last line cracked me up:

After losing Crowder and Johnson-Odom, who will step into the leadership role for next season’s team?

BW: It’s so difficult to predict. When you look back at our tenure here, you never could predict who was going to be the next duo or the next threesome or whatever. Jae Crowder, just this last October, had never received one vote for honorable mention all-conference. Not one coach had ever voted for him. Six months later, he was named player of the year. When you go back to when I first got the job, Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews, the Three Amigos ... those guys were going to win even if Andy Katz was coaching the team.

No mention of Derrick Wilson, Juan Anderson or Jake Thomas either.
And why does he talk up Steve Taylor, but not Jamal Ferguson or TJ Taylor???

Oh, Lord, what could it mean?????

I noticed that as well, but he was talking about Leadership for next year and he bascially mentioned all the JR's and SR's.   If they would have asked him last year would he have metioned DG, Vander or J Wilson?

Man oh man...I love Buzz.

I cannot wait for the game aboard the carrier.  I'm hoping they reach out to Sailors and Marines that went through the ROTC programs of both schools for tickets.

I've always wanted to write Buzz and invite him to Bethesda.  I should talk to our PR and Casualty Affairs people that organize and escort celebrities and other such guests.

I work on the Wounded Warrior unit, and I think back to when Coach read that letter from a deployed Soldier to the team.  I think the team seeing our troops after sustaining their injuries...ranging from gunshot wounds to IED blasts, would motivate them to no end.

radome, you out there boss?  I think it'd be kind of cool for Buzz to check out the Bulldog sessions!

I think it was my sophomore year that we were out doing track workouts one morning when the women's team was also putting in work.  My group was running a cool down lap in formation, and one of the taller women came in and interrupted our formation as she sprinted past....no, THROUGH us, haha.

Well, lets be real here. Mayo is expected to be one of our best players next year. Derrick, Juan, and Jake are probably not expected to do much. Derrick will be on the bench alot, Juan wont be able to bulk up like he needs to, and Jake is a walk-on who hasn't played at this level yet. For him to not talk about someone who contributed as much as Todd is somewhat interesting. Also Steve Taylor is our best recruit for next year so of course he was explicitly mentioned vs. a JUCO who many don't respect as much as they should, and a lower rated player.

Everyone is worried about Mayo. If there is a name to come out of Hiroshima it will almost definitely be Todd Mayo.

Great read. Love the stuff Buzz talks about.

Also, Buzz mentions Mike Broeker, and not Larry Williams. I assume that is a shot across Larry's bow. Right?

Let the quote dissection begin.

Well, let's be real here. Some people have become so emotionally invested in this Hiroshima business that they'll clutch on to just about anything to validate their sense paranoia rather than, it seems, accepting the ever increasing likelihood that there wasn't much to the various conspiracy theories and rumors.

A poster above offered the most the logical reasoning for Mayo's absence... in a question about leadership for next year's squad, Buzz named exclusively the returning upperclassmen and none of the returning freshmen. Simple as that. Occam's razor, and all.

FWIW, it remains to be seen which Taylor is MU's best recruit next year.

Oooohhh .... good one. Hadn't thought of that.
Obviously Buzz's not-so-subtle message that he wanted Broeker to get the AD job.

Steve Taylor eats himself out of a scholarship, transfers to Chicago State.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Good thought, but it was obviously Buzz' not-so-subtle message to settle the Brewcity77 vs. Hoopaloop debate over who deserves credit for the scheduling.  Score one for the Broeker side.

Hey, I'm not in the "tin-foil hat club", but I do like to hear all of the theories and then apply the facts to see what the likely outcome will be.  To me, with all of the Hiroshima junk flying around about academics, with Mayo seemingly one of the most likely casualties, I look at what Buzz is saying about next season's team and my brain makes a connection about why Buzz didn't mention Mayo.  Just one more indication to me that maybe he won't be here long.

I really hope that's not the case, but that's where the signs seem to be pointing.

Well, let's be real here.  There is no parade that CAN'T be rained on, and no set of quotes from Buzz that can't be parsed to the point of being crushed into a fine powder and snorted, giving the user an intense period of melancholy.

Apparently now folks are parsing what he DOESN'T say.  PROGRESS?

FACT:  Mayo missed team activities between the end of the basketball season and the end of the semester because he was working on maintaining his academic eligibility.  This was told to me by someone close to the program and verified by others...including other Scoopers.
