Benny B

Turn the clocks back to Benford's hiring...

Buzz: Aki, would you like a promotion?
Aki: Actually, I'd like your job.
Buzz: Well, you're going to be waiting a very long time.
Aki: Well then maybe I'll find a job someplace that is going to need a new head coach soon... [whispered] or maybe I'll start a bunch of rumors about athletic standards and discipline and force your hind end out of here.

Of course, if there is one iota of truth to the above, I'm definitely paraphrasing.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Interesting to see how this affects Jameel McKay's decision, since it appears that Aki was the contact person for him.

We are finished- not only do we have the upcoming Hiroshima (timing now unpredictable), we also have the forthcoming "other shoe to drop"

Surprised Buzz isn't checking into openings in the WIAC just to get out of this mess....

We are done. Finished. Kaput. Why even bother fielding a program?

This is tragic. You thought 9/11 was tragic? THIS is tragic.

My sources say all recruits now will de-commit and sign on at Memphis and North Texas.

Catastrophe. You thought the Japan tsunami was a catastrophe? Please.

How bad is that? Pretty soon, we'll only be able to beat DePaul by 10, that's how bad.

This really puts the "oy" in Ring out Ahoya.

I'm ashamed to be a Marquette grad. I remember when I graduated in 1982, I said: "I'll be a loyal alumnus, donate regularly and support everything having to do with Marquette unless we lose Aki Collins in 20 years.

Done. It was good while it lasted, though.

jsglow

I wish Aki the best.  My instincts (no inside sources) tell me that Buzz has a plan for Associate Head Coach and that it didn't include Collins.  So when a guy figures that out, he seeks alternatives.

The Process

By this point, the posts such as these that deride those who predicted Hiroshima are 100 times worse than those who predicted it in the first place.  I count one post of the former in this thread, and about a half dozen of the latter.

Honestly, I have no idea why you would even write a post like that above.  You have made this same point in multiple threads.  One of the mods even smacked you down for it.  You should probably learn from this experience.

Hards Alumni

Whoopie.  Show me the last great Aki Collins recruit aside from Todd Mayo.

Totally replaceable.

LIKE ANY ASSISTANT COACH.

Thanks Goose - glad I made your day...

You firing up that email campaign to save MU basketball again to stop the other shoe from dropping?

Shoes dropping seems more appropriate name for a MU basketball catastrophe than Hiroshma at least....

Why is a thread on losing an asst coach a dumb thread? Seems to be newsworthy and does not seem to be a ton of panic over the news. Once again you feel the need to jump down people's throats when you do not like what is posted. I agree with Topper and believe most on here want to hear news, good or bad.

Goose the thread is not stupid but the comments that day Buzz losing assts is bad or is an indication of something bigger surely are

I assume it wasn't a Math major in 1982. ;)

Darn that new math! I get the number of years I've been married wrong, too.

Wish he were staying and do not like timing of it. Would have thought this would happen in April and not this late.

You must have been downright furious when Rick Majerus left us in June of '86.  Talk about not liking the timing of things.   >:(

If he was, he was one of the few.

Yeah, the only way the Majerus departure was bad was because of who they hired to replace him.

The students were mad when Majerus left over the summer.   Felt we were close, if we had beat UNC, things would have gone differently.   Definitely a vibe when everyone came back for 86-87 that the sweater vests had driven him out.   The student section booed the alumni section a lot the next year.

The students were wrong.  Nowhere near close.

Dude, Point and or Eau Claire will spare no expense.  Donors on the phone now offering Buzz his own deer stand and an RV for travel.

Don't forget a chance to meet Bo. Isn't that what every WIAC coach wants?

If Buzz offered the Associate spot, I wonder if he could lure away Dwayne Stephens from Michigan State. Doubt he'd stay more than 3-4 years before landing a HC gig, but he's a stud recruiter and excellent big man coach. And if Buzz did end up leaving in the next few years, I'm not sure there are many better "in-waiting" types in the country.
Did some research on this guy and yea he is the real deal. That is the exact type of coach I would want as our Associate. 9 years behind Izzo, multiple final fours, and National Championship. Would be great to lure him away.
