Good enough for me.

A source told CBS Sports that Memphis coach Josh Pastner will hire Marquette assistant Aki Collins to complete his staff.

brewcity77

Oh no...that's awful news. Goodbye, DFS.

chapman

Unfortunate and a little peculiar.  Wonder if Buzz was looking to hire over him and not give him the top assistant billing after Benford left?  Any word on candidates to fill these open spots?

This is really a blow, if only because it indicates we're still a step below Memphis in the pecking order. I was hoping Aki would go to a HC job, not a lateral move. Now we need 2 top-level assistants. Hope Buzz has his guys lined up, I don't think he can afford to wait long with only 1 assistant.

Not if Buzz wasn't ready to give him the head assistant position or associate head coach label.  Have to wonder if Ferguson is a casualty of this? I don't think DG would go anywhere. Anyone else he recruited?

brewcity77

Wasn't Aki lead on Mayo, or was that Monarch?

hoops12

For those that doubted my comments the other day, this is the first shoe to drop. Why would Aki leave for another assistant job? He was a major component to a staff that just came off of two Sweet 16's, and we have some great recruits in the mix. You better start getting vocal, or the basketball landscape will change dramatically in the next year!

He's already on staff at SMU. They agreed to terms right after Larry Brown was announced, but there was no immediate press release so Howard could continue recruiting with no restrictions.

chapman

Clearly he's concerned about recruiting with our new impossible academic standards, so he decided to go where he knows there are none.

TedBaxter

He was also the lead on Jamail Jones.

If You Aren't All In For Marquette Basketball, Move On

If Buzz offered the Associate spot, I wonder if he could lure away Dwayne Stephens from Michigan State. Doubt he'd stay more than 3-4 years before landing a HC gig, but he's a stud recruiter and excellent big man coach. And if Buzz did end up leaving in the next few years, I'm not sure there are many better "in-waiting" types in the country.

Why?  It all depends if he had an opportunity to jump up or not at MU.  Assistants leave places like UCLA, Duke, UNC, IU, KU, UK to other programs because they are promoted.

Ferguson is already signed so I doubt it.  This isn't a situation like when Layer left and Aaron Bowen hadn't yet signed his NLI.

Thought Pastner was Buzz' friend? Maybe this is how he looks out for those of endearment before Chernobyl.

Or maybe Collins and Buzz simply weren't getting along...

I mean, he did look at Louisville last year and that was before all that Hiroshima crap.  Let's not assume that this has anything to do with that.

Goose

Wish he were staying and do not like timing of it. Would have thought this would happen in April and not this late.
