They can legally spear any time they want, but only do it in the spring when the fish are shallow. Plus they can set nets.

Fished the Minocqua area today and caught quite a few smallies, including this toad.

Another day, another 60 smallmouth. Most in the 16-18 inch range. My buddy wanted fish for dinner, so we also got a bunch of crappies, LM bass, northerns and and 8.5 inch bluegill. Only kept the crappies. The day before I got a 35 inch muskie on my smb gear.

Just finished spawning here on most lakes this week. Saw a couple fish on beds but for the most part they were empty. Talked to a DNR biologist earlier in the week and he said they were seeing them on the beds at night while shocking Monday and Tuesday.
Wish I was going to Canada.

Anyone fish the Milwaukee area at all? I finally got my pole down here and want to try the Milwaukee River.  Any tips?

I usually go behind the Marcus Ampitheatre. Also, a drive to Port Washington is always nice!

Where were you?

Was in GB up near Sister Bay looking for smallies... not much action.

Muskie was the one catching the smallies.

I had read reports that smallies were on the beds last week in Northern Wisconsin. Probably over now, and on to gills on the beds.

We caught about 200 white bass on Winnebago last weekend. Took the big boat out on Michigan and got 1 laker, 1 king, and 3 rainbows.

Hitting Lake Minnetonka next week.  Anyone hear any reports up there?

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

If you are launching at Grays Bay, remember that hwy 101 is closed.

We typically set off near Manbearpig's Bay but that's actually good to know since we typically go into Wayzata for dinner/drinks after we get off the boat.

Anyone ever fished around Ely?  Looking for a good recommendation for a lodge/guide type package place to take the wife for our first anniversary (at her request!).

Yeah, but I'm sure that the Bay is behind.  A few nesting, but the water just started to warm.

On Memorial Day Weekend, I was up in Door Co. with my brother in law fishing on the bay side.  We got three walleye, from 23-27 inches.  The problem we had was filleting them, as his mom (my mother in law) must have used the fillet knife to cut barbed wire.  I got a sharpener the next day and all turned out good.

Here's my question for Scoop fishermen.  My brother in law is turning 50 next month and his siblings want to get some fishing and boating related gifts.  A new fillet knife is in the plans, but does anyone have any other good fishing/boat gift ideas for someone who is an avid fisherman/boat owner? I'm thinking of maybe a portable table to use when filleting fish?  What other great ideas can Scoop fishermen come up with?  Thanks Scoopers!

Get an electric fillet knife. I don't eat fish (!! Don't start, I've heard it all before) so I don't have personal experience, but a friend who fillets hundreds if not thousands of fish every year (he works for the DNR) swears by his. I saw him fillet 5 walleyes in the time it took other guys to do one.

Check out Leech Lake fillet knives.  Guys who have them say they get a whole season without sharpening them.

I pilot for trolling motor.

Williams Whitefish spoons. Not easy to find the large size. Dynamite on Nords.  Plain silver is my favorite.  Get the C90 size.

So trolling for walleye or brownies you'd use the C90?  color?

C90 casting for northerns.  Use a fairly heavy braid for line.

I can find that size at Marine General in duluth. They have an on line catalog. Cabelas does not carry that size. Don't bother.

Silver is my best color.

15 fish this morning. Mostly smallies. 4 fow. 4 lb test on an Ultralight. Bobber and crawler off the dock, and my fat arse firmly planted in a deck chair.

Life is good.
