Are you drunk?  Seriously, this is a stupid idea.

You hating it is all the more reason to like it.

Good.  I encourage you to keep talking about it.  Write Larry Williams a letter too.  I am sure it will be well received.

Of course Williams will never consider it.  He has the same sedentary unimaginative thinking as you.

Never mind the fact that their might be two (or more) Olympian speed skaters on campus now ... one that won a silver medal in 2010.  Never mind that numerous MU alumni have won Olympic metals in speed skating.  Never mind the fact that NBC color commentator for speed skating is an MU alumni, Andy Gabel.  Never mind that the premiere training facility for speed skating is 15 minutes from campus.

Why I must be drunk to think that the MU athletic department would do anything like promote this sports within the NCAA.

Maybe the mods can lock this thread so we can get on to more important things ... like starting another 38 threads about MU starting a football team!

1.  I love when people don't agree with their hair-brained scheme that they are labelled "unimaginative."  Athletic directors are smart people.  Tell me why no one else had this extremely imaginative and well-thought out idea?

2.  Very few people care about speed skating.  Sure it is nice that past and hopefully future Olympians are on the MU campus.  But that doesn't mean crowds will beat a path to the Pettit Center to watch the team skate.  It would be a huge money loser.

And how much money will Lacrosse make?

Did you factor in a MU tie to speed skating betting promoted for two weeks on the winter Olympic broadcast?  What is that kind of exposure worth?  Let's tell every kid with any kind of interest in speed skating that you can go to MU and get a quality degree while being an Olympian.

Yes your right, these are terrible ideas.  Smart people like ADs will be kept awake at night thinking about fuel bills for shuttle buses to run down to the Pettit center and kill the entire idea.

Sure glad your around to shoot down hair-brained idea.

Doesn't matter.  Very few will care.

As for lacrosse...who knows.  Bold idea, but not sure it will pay off.

LAX coaches have been hitting the Chicago suburbs hard, and it's been paying off as they've been stealing mid-level recruits that would go to smaller powerhouses.

Hopefully it translates into something.

Sultan like lacrosse so it is "a bold move" for MU to promote it.  Since Sultan cares about Lacrosse, Sultan believes others will care.

AnotherMU84 likes speed skating so he is drunk to think MU should promote the sport that has produced more Olympians than any other sport in the history of MU.  Why?  Because Sultan does not care about speed-skating and Sultan has decided no will else will care either.

It think that fairly summarizes our differing positions.

It's okay for Sultan and yourself to have differing opinions, man.

However, trying to paint Sultan out to be a dick it just petty.

Maybe you should just agree to disagree.

Sultan said I was "drunk" for arguing in favor of speed skating.

He painted himself a dick, I'm just telling you to look at the picture he made.

1.  I don't care about lacrosse.
2.  Lacrosse is a current NCAA sport that is played by many schools in our conference.
3.  Lacrosse attracts good crowds at many institutions.
4.  You cannot say #2 and #3 apply to speed-skating.

Bottoms up!!!

ZiggysFryBoy

MU helping start speed skating at the NCAA level, and being good at it, would only help our Capital One Cup point standings.

5. You can play lacrosse in any soccer field.

Also doesn't apply to speed skating.

If you think it's reasonable to make speed skating a sport, might as well make a pitch for luge and bobsled while you are at it.
Have some patience, FFS.

Butch Lee was snubbed by the US Olympic team so he played for Puerto Rico at the 76 Olympics. He almost single handedly beat the US team. It would have been the greatest upset in Olympic BBall history.

Don't get me wrong, their is nothing wrong with Lacrosse, it is a fine sport.  And maybe we do well.  But you perfectly describe sedentary unimaginative thinking.  Follow the conference and start a Lacrosse team.  Follow, not lead.

How about some imaginative thinking and push an unique strong suit of MU, arguably the sport the school has had more athletic success than any other, producing speed-skating Olympians.  Something that you will be proud of every fourth winter.

Maybe Warrior-Chick is correct and its too narrow a sport for the NCAA (who knows until you try).  But given MU's history and nearby facilities, the MU athletic department should do something to encourage speed-skaters to attend MU. How about an athletic scholarship program at MU for aspiring speed-skaters?  Does one exist?

Right now their are Olympic metals in the dorms of MU.  Their are future Olympians in the dorms of MU.  None of them have anything to do with the AL or the Athletic Department.  That is wrong.

The best athletes in MU are not under the programs overseen by the AD.  How many major D1 schools can say this?

mr.MUskie

How about arm wrestling?  We have tables on campus!

Is your kid a world class speed skater?  I went to high school with one.  At the time he was the most unknown athlete in our school of 750 guys.  He got the last laugh on all us football and basketball players.  Care to guess his world famous name?  Oh, and as a parent I'd recommend AGAINST taking one's Olympic metal into the dorm.

This is cute.  But...again (and for the last time)...generally speaking no one cares.  And I don't think MU should be wasting time with sports no one cares about.

Let's apply your logic larger ... we should shut all sports except basketball because no one cares about anything except football and basketball.  Cross country, golf, soccer, track, volleyball ... shut them all down.

Speed Skating is something unique for MU.  No one else can produce what MU can/has.  In a world of thousands of universities vying for attention.  It is a low cost way to get attention.

GGGG

We have a minimum number of sports we must have to participate in the NCAA....AND NO ONE GIVES A SH*T ABOUT SPEED SKATING...which ISN'T EVEN AN NCAA SANCTIONED SPORT!!!

Tugg Speedman

You've made that clear many times over.

Like I noted before, you insist one making sure everyone knows you're a dick, I just keep pointing out the picture you have painted.

It will never happen, but an MMA team would be pretty sweet. I would imagine it would also get a good crowd of students, alums, and general fight fans.  Too bad it will never be more than a dream.
