You think Durley will be at the same Prep School (sorry, I could not help myself).

Have read this entire thread and now that i am finished shaking my head in amazement i have just one question????!!!!

What in the hell makes anyone think that because Nolan stood outside n shot threes in HS that that would in any way shape or form represent the way be would be asked to play at MU????

So you're advocating recruiting a guy whose game the coaches will want to change completely?  Really, is that smart?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

There have been more centers at MU with virtually no offense than those that did. It is a loooooong list. I don't think changing his offensive game is a big deal,  he'll still likely have more offensive talent than the majority of recent centers at MU.  Also, I'll give the scouts that rate him high the benefit of the doubt.  There are obviously some good reasons behind his national rankings.

Nolan would likely not slow us down, given our style of play. Eventually MU will have to start landing talented bigs and steer away from the Durley's, Rosboro's, and Mbao's of the world.

Jamil Wilson's game is much different than it was in high school.  Happens all the time.

If Durley ends up being successful at Marquette, he'll have proven himself to be the world's strongest man. He's going to have to bench press 10-15 buses off his chest that Scoopers have thrown him under.

Glad we can put a rest to Nolan since it looks like he's going to prep school.  As far as the now moot hypothetical of bringing him in then changing his game, I've no problem with that.  Easier to teach a basketball player a new position than to try to teach someone who is big and clueless how to play basketball in any form for the first time (thinking of Mbao when writing that, not Durley).

+1  you said it dude.

That being said, I am of the opinion (baseless) that Durley will Juco it and be on the team in 2 years.

There's developing a player's skills and then there's trying to change his inclinations which I believe can be much more difficult.  If a kid in 6'10" in HS and continually drifts out to the three point line, chances are a coaching staff won't be able to keep him near the lane against bigger competition in college without putting a chain around one ankle.

Jamil Wilson was never accused of avoiding the lane in HS.

I think Nolan is perfect type fit for Buzz's style. Since his skills are away from basket I think he can play the transition ball we have begun to play. Nothing from the returning big guys, especially DG, but they make playing full court press more difficult. Jamil plays the press the best and I think Nolan would be another long, athletic body in full court press.

I would like Nolan as a 4, but I really wouldn't want him to have to play the 5 for us. He can step out and shoot the ball, rebound a bit, and block some shots, but he's not a banger. Guys like Lazar, Crowder, and Jamil may not have had Nolan's height, but all were better suited to bang in the low post than Nolan seems to be. If we can bring him in next year or in 2014 (maybe a JUCO year?) to play the 4, I'd like to have him here, but if we're hoping he can develop into a 5, I'm just not sure that's his game.

Agreed on him being a 4 and think our system is best played without a true 5. If we could land a freak of nature 5 is one thing but I'd take two athletic 4's on the court all day long.

On the other hand, we don't necessarily need him to be a traditional 5 in the ilk of Otule.  If he can defend the low post decently and alter some shots (at least not be a sieve defensively) while being able to run and stretch the floor on the offensive end he could make our system that much better.  His height alone gives him a much better shot at being a decent 5 than someone like Dwight Burke.  At the very least he's only learning technique, not how to overcome a 6 inch height disadvantage.

This is basically what I was trying to say.  Well put Goose!

He wouldn't be a sieve defensively at all, everything would just go right past him at the 5.

I don't know if you're referring to my observations from seeing him play, but I didn't think it would "represent the way he would be asked to play at MU." My observation was more of a surprise than anything -- that a 6' 10" high schooler with nice coordination and footwork would be settling for long-range bombs rather than either playing with his back to the basket more, or slashing and gettting to the hoop. I think he would be ideal for Buzz's system -- basically a taller, slightly less athletic version of Jamil Wilson IMO.

When was this? I went back to the beginning of the month and didn't see anything. Everything I've heard of late is that he'll be headed to St. John's Military Academy...though I suppose, he did visit the other St. John's yesterday.

GoMarquette32

He said it two days ago in a convo. It's specifically says still 2012.

Goose

I would be surprised at Prep School, but who knows?
