6-3 PG that won a state championship as a junior and will be the favorites to win again.  Averaged 18.5 PPG 57 FG%  42 3PT% 82 FT% 5.7 AST 4.4 REB 3.1 STL

Fantastic numbers.  More so when considering he was on a championship team and his senior backcourt running mate averaged 19.6 PPG 4.7 REB 3.4 AST.  Duane has a good chance of putting up bigger numbers next year.

In the NOW section of the JS,  the Dominican coach had a couple quotes that prompted this post.  "He's getting very close to the quickness of Kwamain (Mitchell)".....a very quick 5-10 G now at St. Louis and playing well.

AND....."His vertical,  I'm told,  is between 42 and 44 inches,  so his athletic ability is just off the charts."  Who knows who told the coach this or who took the measurement,  but I feel Duane must at least be close to that for the coach to say that.

To me,  it sounds like he is vastly underrated on the national level right now.  State championship,  prototype size for a PG,  elite athleticism,  great all-around stats and can shoot it.

High praise indeed as Mitchell was the reason St. Louis beat Memphis in the NCAA, IMO.

I guess his vertical just goes to prove that he's Jamil's cousin.

I'd say he's above prototypical size for a PG.

I guess we can write off getting Tyrus Jones in 2014.  I can handle that.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Mayor McCheese

If you have a chance, go watch him next year at Dominican - he will not disappoint.  I have had the pleasure of watching him his Frosh, Soph, and Junior year - and his growth from when he was a freshman to now is unreal.  Freshman year, the scouting report said let him shoot, because his shot wasn't very good.  Now he has a great 3PT shot that he worked on in offseasons.

Very excited to see him in Blue and Gold.

pure genius stuff by Bill Simmons, remember to read day 2

Goose

Agree Mayor. Have seen him play several times and think he is fun to watch. The whole team is fun but really like Wilson.

JakeBarnes

I remember a tweet that either CS or Paint Touches retweeted of Duane saying his vertical was up to 44" based on a gym session his team had.  So if it's not there yet, its pretty close.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

and nice to see local talent being kept in state / in city by MU....

Goose

Madtown,
This is the kind of player that folks that get ball want us to recruit. Sit back and learn from the guys that know their stuff. Would love to have heard your comments about VB when he committed to UW...sure they were priceless since you being a Madtown insider and all.

bilsu

As soon as he plays a game like a freshmen there will be several posters on this site that will want to throw him under the bus.

While I do think that Duane Wilson is underrated, and that MU got a hidden gem, I wouldn't put much stock in his high school numbers.  Simply put, Dominican's schedule sucked.

http://www.wissports.net/team.asp?pageID=2&tid=469&sportID=1

A handful of truly competitive games, but by and large they are in a terrible conference.  Now the good news is that Wilson performed very well against the toughest team on their schedule...he dropped 23 against Germantown.

Goose

Sultan
Right on both counts. His team was best team on the court 99% of the time and his numbers are not perfect reflection of his skills. Do think he is a hidden gem and he is great athlete. He will be fun to watch both next year and at MU.

The Lens

I know his HS coach pretty well.  He's coached a number of D1 players (UW, SLU, Loyola, UWGB) and does not get caught up in the excitement that some coaches do.  You can pretty much bank on his his assessment being fair.

IMHO I think he is a far better judge of talent than he is a coach.  In all my years watching him, any time he had to actually do something in the game they haven't done very well.  See the state tourney in 2001.

Oops, I just realized that this may also suggest that Diamond Stone is not yet the next coming of Shaquille.

My belief that Duane might be vastly underrated is just based in part by his statistics.  He showed that he doesn't just have potential at that level.  He showed that he produces at that level.  It's hard to tell how well he will transition to a giant leap in competition,  but his FG, FT, and 3PT percentages are all good-to-great.  The FG% is obviously a reflection of the competition,  but the 3PT and FT percentages should give an indication that he has a nice stroke.  However,  as stated,  his stats were just one part.  He has been referred to as a PG more than a combo.  So, his elite length is part of the equation.  So is his "off the charts" athleticism.  Every year there are guys ranked very highly SOLELY on elite length and/or athleticism.  Added bonus:  dad being his AAU coach.  He has presumably played for a long time and with good instruction.

Duane's got a state title under his belt and is at ease in front of a mic.

This is all from a junior in HS.

Welcome to MU, and proud to call you a Warrior, Duane!

Nice video -good find

Earl Tatum

Player who we should go after is Xavier Rathan-Mayes, 6-3 guard. If Nunn is better, then he must really be good. Mayes is unstoppable.

I don't disagree with any of this.

Wilson dropped 35 in an AAU game tonight.  I'd rather have Rathan-Mayes over Nunn.  I know Nunn is good but how much of that is Parker drawing almost constant double teams?

We were in on XRM for awhile, not sure if we still are, guessing not as our class seems to have filled out. He seems like an elite prospect. I'd love him at MU if Buzz can find room.

DomJamesToTheBasket

Great start to the AAU season!  If he comes in with confidence ala Mayo, he could have a nice impact as a Frosh.  Then again,  there haven't been many Frosh with Mayo's mindset.  I also loved hearing that he goes to a trainer twice a week to specifically work on strength and conditioning.....added 12 lbs of muscle in a short time.  It's a great sign that he's putting in the work necessary to gain strength,  as well as having the ability to actually gain the muscle unlike a lot of his peers.

I don't WANT to lose anyone off our roster as its looking next year but I'd be willing to give up a transfer for him.  The kid is a lights out scorer.

See Sam Dekker at Sheboygan Lutheran.  Talk about a sucky schedule.  Living Word High just didn't have it this year.

MuMark

You don't have to look at Decker or Wilson's high school numbers to know they will both be players.

They both have excelled against top competition when they had the chance(AAU, Post season(Decker) etc)

Joe Wolf had little competition when he played at Kohler.....All you had to do was watch him play to know he was a stud.

I guess I know his coach also.  I just watched the video and saw Coach Paul W.  I went to grade school with him!  The mighty St. Agnes Deacons of Butler USA!  He was a tiny kid with back horn-rimmed galsses.  He was two years behind me.  I knew he was coaching at Dominican a while back, but had forgotten about it.  Small world.
