Ugh, could Hunts reporting (let me check that "opinion column") be any lazier?

"Buzz takes on a few too many JUCO transfers for comfort."

Jae Crowder
DJO
Jimmy Butler
Joe Fulce

Remind again which one of those guys made everyone "uncomfortable?"  What does he even mean by uncomfortable?

Edit: Also Dwight Buycks

Anyone that judges a player simply by whether he went to a JUCO or not prior to matriculating at Marquette is a complete moron unworthy of anyone's respect.

Michael Hunt has to be the worst "reporter" in their sports department. I can't remember the last time I read one of his pieces and found it to have any redeeming value.

BLUEPRINT, those are some strong words of hate toward the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, strong words that you do not substantiate.

How is the Journal Sentinel "a pitiful excuse in jounalism?"

And how is this "pitiful excuse in jounalism" a newspaper "that somehow just keeps getting worse?"

I read the Journal Sentinel daily and find it to be a pretty good newspaper that seems to know and understand its readers and its communities pretty well.

And to brewcity77: Michael Hunt is a columnist, not a reporter. You do understand the difference?

Give the Journal Sentinel a little love, guys. Without strong print journalism -- newspapers, specifically -- we will be in a world of hurt.

(Yes, Blue Horseshoe, his name is Mike Hunt. It makes you giggle, we know.)

I've seen his articles presented as both, and I take issue with any newspaper that lets someone spew as much biased crap as he does. He takes any chance he can to attack Marquette, in this instance blasting MU for what have been to date some of the highest character (and highest APR rates) guys in all of Wisconsin basketball over the past 4 years. He also encouraged Marquette to violate University policies a year ago during the whole scandal when he all but demanded they release the names of the athletes involved, despite Marquette having clearly stated they could not and would not do that.

He hides behind the "editorial" banner and uses it as grounds to attack rather than formulating educated and researched opinions. For well over a decade, he has been doing this, and regardless the topic, virtually everything he spews comes out as hate-filled and objectionable. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of good at the MJS, but Michael Hunt is the furthest thing from that. He has no business continuing to work for a legitimate news source, and his presence is a continued embarrassment to what is otherwise an okay newspaper.

That was once true. Isn't anymore, and there's a reason for that...as alternatives have emerged they have clearly exposed just how weak the traditional print 'journalism' actually is. If the Journal Sentinel disappeared tomorrow, I really don't think anyone would notice because there would be more than enough options to fill the void. Lazy, one-sided, biased reporting is easily replaced (and it is being replaced all over the country more and more every day).

I wasn't aware that anyone respected Hunt's writing anymore. It's like anything Beck or Olberman says, you know exactly what their going to say, so why bother?

Not defending MJS here, but everyone would notice it being gone tomorrow. The alternatives you speak of generally are aggregates stealing the MJS ground work or bloggers without any substantial knowledge.

While Hunt is lazy and biased, there are reporters all over the country generating the news that cannot be replaced by the HuffPo, Patch or Big Ron's Blog.

What does Hunt think of all the JUCO (call it what you want, UW-transfers) students that attend UW?

Please.  JS would not survive without stories by AP and NYT.  The local reporting has been cut to the bone. They provide pretty good coverage of the Packers, because that sells papers.  Their college and HS basketball reporting is thin, and I think that's being kind.

This has to be the most excitement involving Mike Hunt in about 5 years.  Let him roll over and go back to sleep now.

No newspaper outside the top 5 markets would survive without the AP, none.

Even if the local coverage isn't as thick as you would like, it's more than you get without it. People are insane to think they'll naturally get their news without the evil empire that are newspapers.

Ari Gold

MU Avenue must work for JournalBroadcast Group.

Fact is, between radio, tv and online sources (like Patch, OnMilwaukee), JS is being squeezed out of the market. JS is a dinosaur and will be extinct soon. JS moved up the extinction date by forcing readers to pay per article.

I won't rant about the other ed writers in the JS, but I think it's safe to say that Mike Hunt is the 2nd worst sports writer in Milwaukee(if Dave Begel counts). Like other folks said, Mike Hunt is slanted and lazy.

Chicago_inferiority_complexes

To Ari's point, I wonder to what extent the profit (those evil corporate profits!!!1) of the talk radio stations owned by Journal Broadcast Group are propping up other parts of the organization that operate at a loss, which has to include not a few papers and possibly the JS itself.

ringout

Mike Hunt took another shot at JUCOs today.  If I didn't know better, I'd think he was a racist.

For certain topics like local business/development (Tom Daykin), the JS is good and nothing comes close.

For sports, honestly, it's worthless. There are tons of blogs that provide more in depth coverage and national columnists to provide thought-provoking articles.

Honestly, the only reason Mike has a job is because 50+ crowd must still read him. I read his stuff occasionally, and I never find it insightful, or well researched or thought provoking.

He seems to shoot from the hip, which is the kind of coverage I can get from the local drunk at the end of the bar is Stallis.

"Yeaaa, ya know Marquette has a team full of juuucos. Wonder who is doing their homework for them, huuuuh?

Stupid.

An interesting topic would be to discuss JUCOS in the landscape of college hoops (some good, some bad), and how there have been some successful kids at MU. What is MU doing differently with these kids? Why did Cinci seem to have "thugs", but MU's guys seem to graduate?

But, that would have required some research vs just writing whatever he wanted.
