If all the students buy in it'd be really cool looking IMO. Just watched a YouTube video on Utah State doing it and everyone cheered...which might help to get them to cheer the rest of the game, too.

Rather than crap on the student section like usual...why not give them support when they actually try something "new."

In more important news...let's beat Georgetown.
Exactly I don't see whats wrong with it. It's funny how some people say it sucks (PTM) but yet the best student section in the country is the one saying that chant so it can't be that bad... We need all the help we can get and its about time the student section started getting back into games.

Gonna need students to show up first before thinking about coordinating new cheers.

Just seems like too little too late, an it's a blatant rip-off. I do like that someone wants to show initiative, and maybe this could start something...but just lifting USU's chant? Not a fan.

There's a whole off-season coming. I'd suggest trying to coordinate things then. That Golden Avalanche is a great idea. How about free throw motions that change the background? Everyone moving from right to left continuously on one shot, then switch on the next, or waving arms right to left, then the same things with every other row alternating.

Get a chant or two, but maybe make them Marquette-specific, or at least different than other schools are doing. Publish a 1-page pamphlet and pass them out so everyone knows what to do. I think improvements can definitely be made, but it's easier to plan these things over 6 months than it is 6 days.

I'd be beyond embarrassed if this catches on. I thought it was lame when it was chanted at high school basketball games 10 years ago and now we're trying to rip off the Mormon tabernacle choir for creative inspiration? Effing kill me. MU should be unique like our unis. Copying a bunch of white Mormon dorks is the opposite of cool.

I agree that if we're going to try to coordinate something that's already out there it should be the wave in unison that has been proven to affect FT%. That would actually be worthwhile.

We might as well just steal the Budweiser song from Georgia Tech

If the students are so much smarter than all the MU alums on this board (as some posters like to continually bring up), you'd think they could come up with something original.

Hell, in the late 80s I would just show up drunk, shout obscenities, and then go drink some more after the inevitable Dukiet beatdown.  In that light, I'm just pleased the kids manage to haul out a gold t-shirt now.

I agree with Brew. A lot of the reason I think this is dumb is because of the timing and method of the idea being distributed. There's a significant portion of the student section that barely knows a basketball game is going on and just randomly shout out "Oh I go to class with that guy." They aren't going to be able to pick up on this because they have seen it on TV and know how it goes from watching Utah State (unless they tune in to see a legendary coach at work).

I think if you want to do something and foster it into some tradition, start it at Marquette Madness. This year you could have had D-Wade leading a chant that they want to carry over into the season. I'm sure that would have allowed for more buy-in. Also, having it be more Marquette specific would be much better.

I haven't been able to go to many week day games due to night classes, but haven't found the crowd to be any worse than most years for the most part. Probably worse attendance and not as loud, but I think that is just magnified by the schedule. I fully anticipate the Georgetown atmosphere to be electric. We haven't faced any ranked teams at home, outside of Louisville. We have only had one Saturday game at home not during break (I don't count the Pitt or Louisville game because there were still a lot of people moving into dorms those days, even on the Louisville game). That was the Cincy game and I feel it was a good atmosphere.

I'd rather the student section still suck than start stealing obvious cheers from other schools.

As for the "I Believe That We Will Win" it is Utah State's thing but lots of schools use it just like "We Are (School)".

Seriously. I thought the big heads were actually pretty cool when they first came out cuz I thought they were unique to MU. Then I found out they were ripped from the SD St. student section and that's frankly pretty pathetic. Let's get original. And not wait 'til the last game of the season to try and mail some inorganic crap like this in. I propose everyone goes the Sultan route and shows up drunk yelling obscenities then leaves to drink some more. That's what I did when I was a student and that's what I'll be doing tomorrow.

MUDPT

I'll be more disappointed if there is no Buzz "two-stepping," by the whole student section at some point. Alma Mater, Buzz out of the tunnel, best student section in the country, Buzz introduction, etc..

I've seen this chant in action and it's horrible. It doesn't work and it doesn't sound good when it does work. I really hope MU Students won't sink this low. Instead think about singing a little John Denver as one student section. Now that would be a sight.

Stick with pre-tip over the head clap that's been done for decades.

The intent is fine but I still have a lot of issue with it for the following reasons:

-Timing sucks
-Not the way you roll this out, should be more organic and feels like yet more meddling by the school.(this is almost as lame as Becky's "attempts" to stop the eat sh#@ f%^k you chats at Camp Randall).  They could have very easily try to organize this through some of the influential students.
-Conceptually its fine, but come up with something original to chat.  Completely lifting it from another school and even mentioning them in the announcement is just stupid.
-There is no chance this works this late in the season so why try it?  You'll have shot your wad half assed and you've lost any "Good will" from the students to try something like this.
-I believe I will win as a chant???  How passive aggressive is that?  Chant something that at least has a little confidence in it.

Why not start the game as Buzz walks in w/"Country Roads" and end it with "Rocky Top"  ;D

Agreed. I like the initiative of these students for trying to get the student section organized, but the timing is terrible and the idea is even worse since it's blatantly stolen from another school. I guess it's a half-step in the right direction though.

MUBB released this statment in an email to all students:

A message from your fellow Fanatics...

Fellow Fanatics:

We would like to unveil a NEW CHANT for this Saturday's game. I hope everybody is getting extremely excited about this upcoming matchup against Georgetown as we are. A few other fanatics and I have been trying to think of some great ideas to make this Senior Night a special one, and we finally came up with one to share with you. If you are not aware, Utah State's student section is one of the best in the country. Before every game, they perform an "I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN" chant that we would like to replicate on Saturday. Please click here to see what it looks like.
This "repeat-after-me" style chant will be led by a few of your fellow fanatics from the front of the student section on Saturday. We will be doing this RIGHT AFTER THE OPENING TIP occurs. We would like to bring some energy to the Bradley Center for DJO and Jae's last game and we feel like this would be the perfect fit. Thank you for your time, get ready to chant; we look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

WE ARE MARQUETTE!

-Joey Godziszewski, Spencer Bonahoom, and Jim Love

Personally, I think this is a shameless, embarrassing rip off of another schools good idea. It has also been ripped off by EVERY high school across the country. Why can't we come up with something that is our own. This is super lame.

I appreciate the effort, but lets try and be a little bit more creative. Especially if these guys want to be self-described student section leaders. I personally like the student sections that do somewhat of a small dance, such as Iowa State's moving in a circle thing. I think something like this would be original, fun, and get a much better reception from the students.

The 7th grade girls basketball team I coached did this same cheer.

Good summation. Initiative good, timing and choice of chant horrific. Baby steps.

MerrittsMustache

I've often wondered why the students don't dance around like the players do just before the end of warm-ups. Or do a simple, specific dance/move/chant/whatever as each player is introduced (like the "arm O's" for Otule). Don't overthink it. The more elaborate it is, the less chance it has of catching on.

Warriors10

We should play Varsity while we are at it too.

Funny how 3 students try to take initiative and start a new tradition for MU students and they get absolutely railed for it. So what if it's taken from another school...News Flash - ALMOST EVERYTHING DONE AT ANY SPORTING EVENT IS TAKEN FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I can semi-understand the criticism of the timing, but at the same time, it's Senior Day. Not only Jae and DJO's last game, but the last game for many students (as a student) - there SHOULD be something special to get people more involved, interested, and most importantly, excited for the game...mainly because there has been NONE of the three at most games this year.

If you don't like it, fine...but don't criticize the idea when you have nothing better to bring to the table.
