They'll be ranked, no doubt.

They play the Gopher on ESPN on Sunday. No way ESPN doesn't keep them ranked for that.

It's not a bunch of ESPN executives that do the ranking. It's a panel of coaches -- or at least their surrogates.

Not saying whether or not Indiana will be ranked (though I think it will). Just saying there's no ESPN-controlled conspiracy.

The AP poll is compiled by polling sports writers, so I'm sure some of them work for espn.  Not saying there is a conspiracy either, but I wouldn't put it past espn

Unfortunately I think rankings are tied closely to the name recognition of a college/university.  We have seen it this year.  We can lose one game and drop 4 spots.  Other teams lose one, they drop 1-2 max.  Our name recognition is not as high as others, such as Duke, UNC, MSU, etc...

Please Note: I'm not saying people don't know who Marquette is.  But more along the line of when you see the name Kentucky, the assumption/expectation that there should be a number to the left of the name

It wouldn't surprise me if IU was still ranked...should they be?  I'll leave that one open for debate.

dwaderoy2004

Yes, they should be.  Wins against Ohio St, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Michigan, Purdue and NC State.  8-7 in the highest rated conference.

rocky_warrior

As much as I want to win the bet against chicos (which is still possible...) Pomeroy does still have them 1 spot above MU in his rankings.  But they've been dropping and MU has been rising.

I think you're probably right Indy.  I'll bet they hang on at 24-25.  Some other teams just below them also took a loss.  The two teams that are getting hammered this week will be MWC schools UNLV and SDSU.  Wow.  Imagine their fan boards.

And not to highjack my own thread but how 'bout a shout out to the South Florida Rams.  Absolutely playing themselves into contention.  CrashingtheDance now has them 8th on the 'outside looking in' list and estimates their RPI at 50.  I watched them absolutely suffocate Pitt yesterday.  If I were Cincy or West Virginia, I'd make sure not to overlook that game.  I'm going to predict they make it all the way and earn a late at-large bid.

As a card carrying member of the Crean Schadenfreude Club .. while I'd rather see him never win any game .. another preference would be that IU experience the same level of March winning as MU did, namely, beside a Robert Jackson fueled Final 4, a whole lot of one-and-dones.

.. which is where IU is headed this year.

Hoosier nation will just get a taste of things to come .. high expectations .. solid conference seasons .. late season fade + NCAA loss, perhaps to a worse seed.

nom nom nom.

I just wish they had beaten someone, anybody.
Their wins: UVM, MRST, FSO, GASO, FAU, FAMU, CLEV, RUTG, VILLx2, HALL, SJUm DEP, Provx2, Pittx2.
Losses:ODU, PSU, VCU, KU, AUB, USM, CONN, ND, #MUBB, Gtown

I think they are going to lose the last 4 on their slate: @Cuse, CIN, @LOU, WV.  10-8 is still respectible in the Beast, but that is a WEAK 10 wins and brutal non-conf.

I do enjoy the timeline of events for IU bball fans this year.

Pre-Season: No Expectations. Talk that next year is the year.
Leading up to UK: Playing well, let's not get blown out by UK on our home court.
Post-UK: "We're Back!" Everyone get on the bandwagon
Lead Up to the B10 Season: This is our year, let's make some noise in the B10.
First Conf Game @MSU: It's a loss...new year and nothings changed. Can't win on the road
The Rise Again: 3 Victories against tOSU, MICH, and PSU.
The Skid: Lose 5 of 7 Games.  Bandwagon Empties. The ND Bandwagon begins filling.  The talk of "next year is the year" begins again
Re-Gain Traction: 3 victories against Purdue, Illinois, and NW. 20 Wins. NCAA Tourney bound but no enthusiasm
Loss to Iowa: Rock Bottom again.

Talking with co-workers at lunch today, one person mentioned that IU was a "fraud" of a top-25 team.  With wins against #1 and #2 qualify them for a top-25 slot.  However, no able to win on the road and loses to Iowa/Minnesota are bad.

They get Minn, MSU, and Purdue to end the season...and NCCU.  So we shall see what happens.  Hopefully they play well.  When IU loses, you can't talk college bball.  Same thing with NFL this past season.  No one would talk football because of the Colts.

Sounds a little bit like our team last year.

Start out doing ok and hope not to get blown out by Duke.
Play Duke close, we're on our way against a mediocre Gonzaga team.
We lose to Gonzaga.  We barely beat UWM.

Put together a couple of wins, we're ready to beat Wisconsin at home.
We lose to Wisconsin.  Despair again.

Pay Vanderbilt very tough, lose by one point.  We're back.
Knock off WVU and Rutgers and play decent against Pitt on the road.

Then the Louisville disaster.  Lose 6 of 9 games which includes a 1 point squeeker win against South Florida Rams Bulls

Things not looking good when suddenly we go on a 3 game winning streak including wins over St. John's and UCONN (on the road)

We are back.

Then a terrible home loss to Cincinnati followed by one of our worst efforts of the year as we get blown out by Seton Hall on the road.

9-9.  Squarely on the bubble.  13 losses already, the most we've had in almost a decade.

Then the Big East Tournament arrives and we win two games.  We're back.

Game three, we are blown out by 25 points.

NCAA Tournament starts and we get a great draw, win two games.  We're back.

Then get blown out by 20 to UNC in a game not that close.

Sounds quite a bit like our team last year.

At the end of the day, Indiana was not supposed to be this good this year.  They're going to be in the NCAA tournament.  They have some great wins and some bad losses.  Their guards are not very good, but as a team they're good enough to be the only team in the nation to knock off Kentucky and only one of several to beat Ohio State and Michigan.

For joining MU Scoop you are automatically administered a card.

Isn't your bet whether Crean will still be employed at Indiana come January of 2012 or something?  I don't see how that is not going to be possible.  They've greatly exceeded expectations this year and why would they can him with the #1 or #2 recruiting class coming to Bloomington in 7 months?

It's Nov 1, 2012 that he must still be employed.  And you might be shocked what can happen in 7 months.  Please ask our friend Chicos.  College hoops is a wacky world.

Just for Crean schadenfreude consideration- I'm glad he did so well early on this year because now Indiana is stuck with him and I don't foresee him making a run at the Big Ten or even being close to the top in that conference for the foreseeable future.

With all due respect SacWarrior, you get recruiting info out in Cali don't you?  Indiana University fans are thrilled to have Crean.  He has re-built the program from absolutely nothing, and I will be very surprised if IU is not near the top of the conference within the next year or two.

Thrilled to have him? You find it enjoyable to root for your favorite team while holding your nose because your coach is such a phony? Believe me, I know of which I speak. There were many on this board like you. Pretending to be happy with a guy while secretly loathing everything about him. When he leaves, you'll see how people really feel about him.

There are some slight similarities, especially when it comes to comparing conference seasons, but can you really compare playing Vandy and Duke "close" to beating #1 UK and #2 OSU?

And I'll say that it isn't fair to either team to bring up the BET and NCAA from last year in an MU/IU comparison until IU plays in their respective tourneys.

You are giving him way too much credit for "rebuilding the program from absolutely nothing"  After all Its Indiana, Its Indiana.  They have a huge recruiting base, name recognition and are top 5 or better program of all time, not exactly "absloutely nothing".  Top recruits are going to come there no matter who the coach is. An arguement can be made that he should have turned it around sooner. By the way, I do not think IU fans think a boder line ranked team is turning it around. We will see if crean can get them to the next level.

By the way, chicos... err  Hoopaloop.  why do you have this incessant need to jump in and defend everything crean and Indiana. It is annoying as hell.

in all fairness, OSU is NOT currently a #2 team so possibly over-rated when they were ranked #2 but I do agree with your point
