Marquette has done this as well, at least for all of the students.  But 85% of the students are too cool and have to wear their free size extra small #3 light blue jerseys or navy blue D Wade shirts.

It doesn't even need to be sponsored by Marquette.  There are plenty of donors willing to drop the cash to subsidize tshirts for nationally televised games.

Even selling them at cost at huge stands by the doors would be doable.  If they had $5 MU gold tshirts for the Cincy game it would have been way better.

Then again, MU's marketing department can't even do a good job getting the word out to anyone besides season ticket holders.  Bleh

The marketing department promotions have severely dropped off since Crean left. Or maybe it was the departure of Craig Pintens.

Either way, they don't believe JFB belongs in the history video.

We pulled off the gold, light blue, dark blue, white, gray, and red out pretty well.  That one I don't get...had to be at least 10 people in the lower bowl, behind the bench side wearing red on Saturday.  Do we have that many die hard Badger fans who are MU prime seat season ticket holders/Badger fans who purchase from season ticket holders, are our old alumni very visually impaired or color blind, or are they that far up their own asses that they wear red to a gold out home game on National Marquette Day?

This....I called last spring to say I was interested in Season Tickets....I got a call way way later than I should have gotten one....

While I've never NOT worn gold to a MU game, I've resigned myself to the fact that even if there were free gold shirts on every seat, about a quarter of the MU fans are hairy wet cats and wouldn't wear it.

I agree that it shouldn't be that hard to pull off. Also, even as an alum, I don't understand why they don't pick a weekend night to have a "student appreciation night" have the student section on the first level around the stadium. I understand ticket sales, but one week night game. Come on.

Nelligan, who works for the Marketing Dept., does not want to sell free giveaway promotions to sponsors because it is non-commissionable for them. Further, the cost of the free giveaways comes out of sponsors budgets, and Nelligan would prefer to allocate their sponsors $s where they are commissionable to them.

Most fans don't really care about how good or bad MU BB PR and Brand Marketing are. All I really want is to keep Buzz happy and get MU wins. But the new AD ought to take a hard look at all the old deals and marketing efforts. I don't expect that our previous AD had any expertise in these areas. Cottingham went with what he had. The inability of the ongoing retained MU AD staff to coordinate MU branding efforts such as gold-outs, getting us more press on ESPN and in Chicago Tribune and SunTimes bears closer evaluation and upgrading.

As a marketing guy - you know, now that my career is over - I'm really surprised by the lack of branding I see from MU in the region. So hard to find decent MU goods (other than Kohls). Yes, MU will ALWAYS be little brother to UW in the state, but they don't have to be soooo little. It's little things over the years that add up that change perception. Making sure releases are sent out frequently. Coming up with neat ways to get people to -and have the media cover - the games.

Mens hoops is the bread and butter of MU and frankly, Milwaukee, as nobody gives a crap about the Bucks. They don't do a terrible job, but I think they are still missing out on some opportunities here.

I agree that MU could definitely do a better job branding the program, and I think they need to continue to focus on connecting with alums.  However, I never want to be like UW or any other massive school with tens of thousands of fans who aren't really fans.  Would it benefit the program financially by selling more gear and tickets to the average basketball fan?  Yes.  Would it be best for MU in the long term, i am not sure.  You are always going to get people who like basketball and attach to the program when we are good and then ditch at a down year, but if you mean that we should specifically market to non-alums to generate support in the local community, i don't know if i like that.  I think it takes away from the current MU identity.

One of the biggest things that I love about MU is no matter where I meet MU fans, there is a 90% possibility that they or their spouse went to the school.  I could care less about seeing MU advertised everywhere, like UW gear is EVERYWHERE in Wisconsin.  Right now, i can place a pretty confident bet that if I see someone in MU gear, especially out of the Milwaukee area, they are an Alum.  There is nothing cooler than being 1000 miles from Milwaukee and meet a fellow alum and have a connection.  Sometimes less is more.
