Their network television deal isn't "major."  I think every BCS conference but the Big East makes more money per team on television revenue than Notre Dame does.

NBC's recent struggles, particularly in the world of sports, also play a part in ND getting their "own" network. If NBC had the NFL afternoon games, they likely wouldn't have needed ND.
