Outstanding attendance today with the students doing their part and nearly filling their sections of the upper bowl to the top row.  I expect an even larger crowd for Georgetown.

MUMac

I thought the crowd was good today.  Loud when it mattered.  Wish it would have made it above 19,000.  Not many Saturday games, and with how MU is playing, would hope to seem more love.

18,815 and you're arguing another 185 people would have made a difference?????

Settled ... this board is utterly incapable of discussing attendance.  No matter what happens they will find fault with it.

Aughnanure

Relax AnotherMU84, I remember my four years with the Big 3, and we broke the "record"  over 19,000 a lot. It wasn't a big deal. More surprised that we can't get over 19,000 for one of the bigger games of the year, if not the biggest (probably GTown).

It's a round number.

And something I4 would have tweeted about.

My point is that I don't know why MU cannot sell out.  This team is damn exciting to watch.  Wasn't quibbling over 185 people.

BTW, there were far more than 185 open seats.

jsglow

The good news is that the largest crowd of the year went home entertained and happy.  That helps sell tickets going forward.  I suspect that the Rutgers game will be very well attended (for a week night) if MU can manage a win over UConn.

They did - http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/020912aad.html

Maybe MU should have "singles night" to move the remaining single seats for Georgetown. Not many people are going to buy a seat to sit by themselves.

Canadian Dimes

you honestly believe when we broke the attendance record for every big game with Crean by 5, that those numbers and "new records" were not contrived?

Please MR. Maniacal was all over that.  Probably right under the final 4 on his resume...Broke Mu attendance record 20 times..

Good for him Buzz is less superficial.

18,815 is a great great great number for Cincinnati, and an unranked one at that.  Notre Dame, georgetown, Pitt, Syracuse and Uconn are the real draws.

And even when we have had 19,000+ there are always a few open seats

A lot of singles together, then.  If that is what MU is saying, several rows stayed home as a goup, today.

Not willing to continue this thread, but at the game, it was FAR from a sell out.  As I stated, MU is a damn fun team to watch and in my opinion, under attended.  If you all want to lambaste me for that view, I will accept it.

+1 ... maybe attendance is down this year because the BE is down?  We don't have a never-ending parade of top 10 teams coming to the BC this year.

18,815 for a team that is getting no votes (Cincy) is not bad.  We also had 18,400 last month for Pitt, another team that was getting no votes.

Added Later ...

MU has played only 1 ranked team this year in the BC .. Louisville on Monday Jan 16.  The next and only ranked team MU will play this year will be current #11 Georgetown on March 3.

Singles night!  Hmmmm good idea, maybe I can take my uw-Madison slore I found Thursday night to watch a "fun" team play (see University of Marquette thread)

Win win for her and I.  She gets drunk, and so do I, all while not sitting by each other.  Then dessert after the game  :P

ya the schedule has not really set up well this year for great attendance numbers....no Wisconsin, no Uconn, no syracuse, no ND.  Louisvilla and Vandy on week nights.

18000+ for unranked Cincy and Pitt is really good.  Georgetown will be the biggest draw of the year

Look, the only games attendance should be down are the Christmas break games.

Using the opponents as an excuse is pretty lame. Do you think the attendance is bad in Lexington just because Kentucky is playing East Tennessee State or there's no sellout in Lawrence just because Kansas is playing Binghamton?

You come to a Marquette game to see, um, Marquette! And this has been a successful, entertaining team for several years running.

It's a big arena to fill, but come on.

You guys do realize capacity at the BC is 18,800.  Being over that means the suites were over flowing.

In other words, GREAT CROWD!!!

Thanks, that was my point.  Probably lost on today with the numbers announced, but sitting in the BC and looking at holes in sections today and wondering why.  Going to a weekday game and seeing most of the upper deck empty.  Yet, going to the Kohl Hole and seeing it packed for Kennesaw State.  That is just frustrating to me.

MU is the only non-football team in the top 10 of attendance nationally.  #3 in the BE behind Syracuse and Louisville.

MU has an undergrad enrollment of 8,000 not 20,000+ like the big football schools.  MU plays in an NBA city unlike Kentucky.

Given all this, what MU does attendance-wise is amazing.

Finally, as I noted in another thread, the admissions standards are much higher today than when I went to MU, or in 1982.  The "fat drunk and stupid" days of 18 drinking age is over.  Kids go to Marquette to, um, get an education.  And with higher quality kids comes less interest in sports.  Ask Duke, they can only get 650 kids to a game.

I realize what my eyes saw.  The upper rows of each student section was empty.  Several sections throughout in the upper deck were also empty.  As someone stated earlier that Crean's numbers were contrived.  Well, the upper decks were virtually full then.  Some seats in the upper corners empty.  Today, much more than that.

MU82

You know what? You make a lot of good points, AnotherMU84. 18,000-plus is outstanding, of course.

I guess I just don't like the "we were only playing Seton Hall" excuse.

As I said, you go to a Marquette game to see Marquette. Do you get more jacked up if it's against a great team? Sure. But you're there to see the Gold.

Unfortunately, it is those "fat, drink and stupid" kids that are not attending.  Not discussing the student section today, but general attendance.  As I stated, being at the game, it was a disappointment for a Saturday game (one of the few) and for the way this team plays.

You are happy with our attendance, I think it should be better.  That is the difference.  This is the first general attendance thread I have seen.  Perhaps my comments play better on weekdays, but I still would expect a full house tonight (yes, I know the numbers given, but unless rows of people decided together to stay home, well, I am skeptical.)

That's not how the casual fan thinks.  They come out when its convenient (on weekends) and against quality opponents.
