Thank you Marquette marketing department for making games entertaining even during stoppages in play.  Every timeout at Marquette has something going on to entertain the fans. Parachutes, crowd cameo, JAG, season ticket holder of the game, kiss cam, dance cam, big head, miller party row, student tuition, pizza giveaway, zooperstars, etc.

Every single timeout at the Joyce Center the band plays, the cheerleaders do some formation, the leprechaun acts drunk, and the students do arm motions. EVERY SINGLE TIMEOUT!!!  EIGHT TIMES A GAME NOT EVEN COUNTING CALLED TIMEOUTS!!! There was one timeout where they threw balls into the crowd, only to go back into the standard timeout boringness.  The timeouts seem like hours at the Joyce.

Never will I take a MU Triva question for granted again!  Thank you Marquette!

at the bc it's nice and everything, but i wish they would change it up a little.  wouldn't take too much of an imagination to come up with other fun stuff.  it's just that it gets too scripted and ho-hum after 20-some games.  i always loved that sumo-wrestling thing that bango does, bring out a trampoline and see if our "golden eagle" really can fly, and when they drop those parachute thingies, it would be nice if more of them had a chance to fall into the 2nd level.  my seats are in the first row.  and our announcer sounds like a d-bag with his long-fake warbbling of our guys names-sounds too www-like

Maybe that's why that dump is such a snakepit for opposing teams.

I'm not a ND football hater, but hearing the arrogant little pricks sing the ND fight song in the Joyce makes me ill.

I sat behind the student section at the game, and I actually thought the flash mob thing was kind of cool.  As much as I hate to admit it, their student section (while it is significantly smaller) is definitely more engaged than MU's.

Also, their pep band has a significantly larger repertoire than Marquette's.  Granted, they need it since they don't really have any promotions during timeouts and breaks, but has our band played anything new at all in the past 3-4 years?  For God's sake, they have been playing "Celebration" since I went to school there in the Stone Age!

That's exactly why -- many years down the road when the Bucks have left town and the BC is condemned -- MU needs to emulate the Joyce & Pavillion when it builds its next arena... but of course, still only Ring Out Ahoya three times a game (four if it goes to OT).

No I think the band looks OK.  I mean, it's a band.  They are always a step behind fashion-wise though.  My friend still had to wear one of those beanie hats in the late 80s.  And then they went to the rugby style shirts about a decade after they went out of date.

I was watching the MSU / Michigan game and Clark Kellogg said that he thought the Breslin Center was the perfect size for a college basketball arena.  But I don't think the problem with the BC is its size...its the layout.  I mean, the Kohl Center is just a little smaller, but it seems like such a more intimate basketball arena, and they play hockey there too.  They built it more up than out.

I do have to say that I now have another school to point to when someone mentions Marquette's lack of diversity.  I can honestly claim that other than a couple of Asian coeds, I did not see a single person of color in the ND student section.

And regarding that row of boys in the front with their shirts off - what an evil tactic!  Trying to blind our players by having the stadium lights bounce off that stunningly white Irish skin!

Agreed.  It's all in the design, and more seats doesn't necessarily equal a better arena; conversely, less seats doesn't lead to better arena either.

The sight-lines you want for a hockey game are very much "wider" than you want for basketball, much like football.  When it comes to watching the game (i.e. ignoring the excitement generated by the "look how close I am" factor), court-side seats are awesome for a basketball game, but for hockey, football, and to an extent, baseball, the view from row one is many times worse than it is from row 50.  In other words, you can see the game better if you sit a little bit further away when watching hockey then when watching basketball; so the BC was a proper design.  It's simply the case that the design doesn't translate to its primary use, and no amount of concession & retail, neighborhood development, parking additions, scoreboard enhancements, etc. are going to change the fact that BC is modestly craptacular when it comes to basketball, regardless of who is actually playing.

Moral of Story:

1) Don't build a church for the Easter Sunday crowd.
2) Don't design a multipurpose arena for hockey.

The Pettit family built the Bradley Center for a NHL franchise. I believe the NHL jacked up the franchise fee like 30% and the team was never brought. I think this opportunity became the Tampa Bay Lighting.

Kind of.  Remember the BC was built by Jane (Bradley) and Llloyd Pettit who owned the Admirals.  In the late 80s, they planned to apply for a NHL expansion franchise but then balked at the high application fee, plus they were going to have to pay off the Wirtz family because they claimed Milwaukee was in the Hawks territory.  (Which is so stupid because I don't know many Milwaukeans that go down to the United Center to watch the Hawks.)

The franchises eventually went to Tampa and Ottawa.  Honestly, it was a disappointment at the time, but I doubt the franchise would have done much.  

If they ever replaced the BC, you can bet the new arena would be much more geared toward basketball.

I'm not complaining.  The city of Milwaukee basically got a free arena out of the deal (not like us chumps down in Illinois, where taxes paid by folks down in Carbondale funded the construction of the new Comiskey).  And Marquette got one of the largest venues currently used for college basketball built a few blocks from campus.

The Isles paid $4M to the Rangers in '72, the Devils paid a combined $12.5M to the Rangers/Isles/Flyers when they moved from CO and LA received half of Anaheim's $50M expansion fee. 

The Jets, Nords, Oilers and Whalers paid $6M to get into the NHL in 1979.
