Missed Layups

Countless missed short ones today...would have had considerable 1st half lead if they made the shots they should have. It's almost like they were hoping for contact rather than making the shot..?

A lot of had to do with the fact that they contorted themselves on penetration drives to get under the basket and were left offbalance when shooting. Vander needs to look at the basket though when he shoots from under 2 feet.

MU is one of the best teams in the BE at attacking the basket and getting to the FT line. When the refs are letting a lot go under the basket, it really hurts MU, especially when the outside shots aren't falling. There were several times today where instead of a missed lay-up, MU would have been going to the line for 2 in most games. It is what it is. When other team shoots 80% on the 3s in the 2nd half, 9 times out of 10, you're going to get beat anyway.

this thread takes me back to the days when everyone was ripping Jimmy Butler for missing lay-ups because he was trying to draw contact.  pretty funny to think back to those posts considering where he is now.   

i would agree with the two previous posts...MU typically does a good job with going up strong and drawing contact/finishing...would also agree that Vander needs to go strong more often and to a lesser extent J. Wilson as well.

There were at least 3 times I thought Jones could have dunked, including one layup he actually made. He was a big-time dunker in high school -- if I remember correctly, I think one of his H.S. dunks even was the ESPN top play that night -- so, yes, he needs to dunk the damn ball!

It's so agonizing to see the potential of an easy lay-up spoiled when the easy bit gets wrecked. Ug.

The other thing that is really starting to annoy me is how often our guys seem to take off-balance jumpers.  DJO is really starting to fade a lot on his jumpers and it seems to have rubbed off on Crowder and J. Wilson.

In other words, because JB is in the NBA now, he was right to miss easy shots when contorting his body to try to get fouled.  Makes sense.

Numerous people have posted and articles have been written about Jamil Jones's play on Saturday.  i think he had good effort but his results were really poor.  His defense was ok, his offense was pretty bad. 

Sure he scored 8 points but offensivley he was basically playing the 5.  he scored 6 of his points off of dribble penetration where the ball was naded to him on the block for a layup.  i will give him credit, he had a basket in the second half where he fought for the ball and thru sheer effort corralled it and layed the ball in.

However, 3-4 times in the first half when we could have created some separation the ball was handed to him and he missed...not contested...but wide open layups trying to softly lay the ball over the rim.  Not saying he could have dunked the ball.  But if he goes up much stronger and uses two hands or or the glass probably makes those.

Additonally, if Devante is healthy he catches those feeds and makes them, and maybe even gets fouled.

Glad Jamial scored 8 points but i thought his play was not so great.

Disagree. There were a lot of missed bunnies. I can't remember the last time I've seen so many uncontested (or minimally contested) shots missed under the hoop. It was embarassing at points. At any rate, it was a bad game, and ND was incredibly hot. These thing happen. On to DePaul for a feel-good rebound W.

Agree with several bloggers... and also yelled at the tv that they should just dunk it when they're at point blank range instead of blind tosses at the rim.  If they dunk it strong, it should also draw a foul.

the worst part of it was we missed like 3-4 in a row in the first half and instead of being down 2 would have been up 4-6 and had that cushion that is so important on the road.  We had to fight up hill the whole game... then with 10 left and ND goes on a 10-0 run...lights out.  Gotta play with a lead on the road and that was our chance.  i beleive jamila missed 2-3 of those layins and JAe one.  one was uncontested after a steal.
