that is surprising, because Mu won by exactly what Pomeroy predicted - 4 points.  Normally when that happens you stay the same in the rankings, so obviously Gtown falling knocked them behind us and haven't studied the rest.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

Who cares. Wisconsin is #2 according to Kenneth, credibility dead.

Boneheaded statement. He already addressed why Wisconsin is more highly rated than they probably deserve to be. Pomeroy is a measure of team efficiency. Wisconsin, despite losses, is still a very efficient team. That doesn't mean they'll always get wins, but they'll give you a consistent performance and play their game regardless of opponent.

Have to agree with Brew.  If one was forced to use a rating system to bet on a winner, I would take Pomeroy in a heartbeat.  Sagarin and that Power Rating are good too, but Pomeroy would be my tool.  And you can forget about the RPI.

esotericmindguy

Sure thing, Wisconsin is the second best team in the country. My bad

And your adherence to that statement shows your inability to understand what Pomeroy's rankings are intended to do. So yes, I suppose it is your bad.

Hoopaloop

Yes, he stated why Wisconsin was misaligned in his ratings, but because of that fans can have their legitimate concerns about the rest of the teams as well.

Do you think Indiana is the 10th best team in the country as KenPom says today?  Something tells me you don't, so does that mean KenPom is also bias for IU as well as Wisconsin?   ::)

10th best? No. 10th most efficient? Sure, I'll buy that.

I don't think Missouri is the 2nd best team in the country, yet that's where the Coaches' Poll has them. I don't think Southern Miss is the 11th best team in the country, yet that's where RealTimeRPI has them. I don't think Murray State is the 2nd best team in the country, yet that's where the Nolan Power Index has them.

There isn't a single poll, computer formula, or other ranking formula that gets them 100% right. I don't get why the idiots always harp on about Pomeroy while at the same time clearly not understanding that Pomeroy isn't necessarily about just saying who's best, but who's most efficient. No system is perfect, but because it's Wisconsin that he has overrated, some MU fans have to piss and moan to the effect that "Pomeroy sucks". That's petty and lame.

Bieberhole69

I've got issues with saying that he just measures "efficiency".  He measures effieciency and presents it as the best indicator of how good a team is thus basing his ratings off of it.  But I do totally agree that any poll is going to have its red flags and Pomeroy's is certainly as good as any other poll out there.

Dont really care how he comes up with it, if UW is #2 then IMO the credibility is lowered. They aren't a very good basketball team.

brewcity77

So which is the perfect system, eso? It's easy to criticize, but when your issue is just one team without any rationalization as to a better formula, it just sounds like petty whining.

MUDPT

As Pomeroy says, people would be upset if someone judged their entire year's work  of 345 days off of one day.  He admits that he doesn't think that UW is the 2nd best team, but if he fiddled with the system, it would screw up a bunch of other teams.  For record, Sagarin has them 3rd based off of predictor (takes into account point differential) and 16th based off of elo chess (which who you beat and not by how much).  The LRMC ratings have Wisconsin 7th.
