Khem Birch, a 6-foot-9-inch forward and former McDonald's All-American, announced he is transferring to UNLV to play basketball.

Birch, who left the Pittsburgh program on Dec. 15, chose the Rebels over Florida. He started six games and averaged 4.4 points this season as a freshman for the Panthers.

Birch visited UNLV over the weekend and attended Saturday's practice. He must sit out two semesters before becoming eligible.

REBELS RISE IN RANKINGS -- Off to its best start since the 1992-93 season, UNLV (16-2) moved up five spots to No. 12 in The Associated Press poll.

The Rebels open Mountain West Conference play Saturday at No. 22 San Diego State.

Lon Kreuger left UNLV last year to take the Oklahoma job.  Now the #12 team, that beat UNC, is getting Birch.  Wow!

I hope Kreuger got a huge raise becasue right now, it's looking like the best thing that happen to UNLV is he left and Dave Rice took over.

That program definitely did not miss a beat with Krueger's departure.

Birch's friend is Anthony Bennett, the number 9 recruit in the country as a PF, who has UNLV on his list.  That would be a nice tandem there.

Rice's brother is the head coach at a power house LV high school.  That is a pipeline now for UNLV.  Maybe they should be in the conference realignment with Marquette?

Seems like alot of players transfer to UNLV lately.

Bishop Gorman is a national power in hoops, sounds like UNLV is on the upswing.

You'd better believe it.  Kreuger didn't exactly go running to Oklahoma.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
