Any ideas?  I know he's not gone yet, but it's looking more and more like it's a strong possibility.

If he leaves, which I pray doesn't happen, I would go after Dana Altman.

The guy is a winner and great coach.

rocky_warrior

Yeah, I'll only accept the question if rephrased to "Who would you bring in to coach at Marquette if Tom Crean leaves?"

To assume he's gone would, uh, just make an ASS out of U and ME...

jutaw22mu

creans not leaving.

just for fun, why not bring in majerus or even better, how about murf.

rocky_warrior

Oh...you did change the question...in that case...

I'd try to get Greg Marshall.

NYWarrior

Mike Brownell.  Midwestern guy and a proven winner at two programs

Does Brad Brownell from Wright State have a brother  ;)

Jim Larranaga:  Out of all the coaches clinic's I've been to, this guy was by far my favorite to listen to.  Do you guys remember during their tourney run last year, how he just talked about how much fun they were having?  This guy is really like that.  He is so full of energy that you just get riled up when you listen to him.  During his talk, he probably only talked about basketball for about 30 minutes out of the 2 hours or so.  The rest of the time, he was just talking about life, competing, and having fun.  There were so many quotes of his that I was writing down that I was getting a cramp in my hand.  I would love it if this guy was our coach.

Mike Anderson:  I love his style of ball.  In your face, pressure defense, push the ball up the court and make the other team play your style.  We have the guards to do this.  I truly enjoy watching his teams play.

Bruce Weber:  I know guys are down on his recruiting, but I love his motion offense.  I believe in sharing the basketball, only dribbling with a purpose, spacing and screening.  In my opiniom the motion offense is the purest form of basketball.  He coached at Marquette High, so maybe he would want to come back.

Chris Lowery:  I was really impressed with SIU's defense.  They were smothering.

Tony Bennett:  I think it's a misconception that his teams play ball like his dad's.  His guys actually push the ball.  I like his blockers and movers offense and his team plays great D.  He also can recruit as he was instrumental in getting guys like Devin Harris.

Needs a better track record IMHO.....only a head coach for two years.  I think he's the kind of guy MU would have expected to hire when the program was in CUSA

he can't recruit a lick....no thanks.  its hard enough to recruit at MU -- Weber offers no advantage there.

What else do you want to see from Lowery?

I wanna see him lead a program for more than 2 years.  His team is led by guys recruited by his predecessor.......Brownell's bio is much more impressive  spanning six years as a head coach in two programs.  Heck he took a 13-15 Wright State team and led tem to 23 wins and a conf tourney title while starting two freshmen this year.

Even he might be a fringe candidate if the MU job came open -- MU moved up a notch these last few years.  Lowry might be good, who knows.  But hey, Bruce Weber looked good with Self's players too.

Consistency from lowery

yeah, both years.  yippee.  He's never even coached anywhere else but SIU.  Far too limited for national program like MU.

Of course two years is a shade more than Stan Heath had, and he had a stronger pedigree. that worked out well.

Brad Brownell as a head coach:

06-07, 23-10
05-06, 25-8
04-05, 19-10
03-04, 15-15
02-03, 24-7

conference tourney record (CAA and Horizon)  13-2

not bad, eh?  Not sure MU should even look at him -- I think they can aim higher

🏀

Oh I agree with you NYWarrior. Lowery should NOT be an option for any outside outside the A-10 or CUSA. Not for another 3-4 years.

I know this was talked about a lot yesterday......but I would bring in Doc Rivers.  I know that he has had some issues with the Celtics but I think he could be an excellent coach at the college level.  Most importantly, I think he would be a fantastic recruiter!

He's never recruited, so you dont know if he would be 'fantastic' at that aspect of the job.  Drexler sucked at UH because of that.

He's an average coach -- just about .500 in the NBA.

No thanks, MU can do better.

The fans here would bitch a fit.  Altman has 5 first round exits and never made the Sweet 16....that, according to many here, is just flat unacceptable.

Screw Altman.....he's in the right spot now and has built a terrific program and has tons of support from Schlegel.  At MU, u have to be able to recruit --its hard to demonstrate that u can at Creighton, so why risk it here at MU.

Stallings or Majerus

Niv Berkowitz

Doc? Not in a million trillion years. No flippin' way.
Majerus? I've turned slightly on this, but I'd still say no due to his health.

Personally, I'd want Kruger...badly....IF Crean were to leave, that is.
I like Lowery too.

I think Brownell is the route CUSA would have taken. Let's go for someone established as a great coach, looking to make the leap to/back-to a prime conference.

Maybe Kruger would tell us to stick it. I don't know. But I would say, he's the target. Pay him what Crean's making and see if he bites.
