The Lens

We had all the momentum in the world in '03 (plus fundraising was at an all-time high) and could have added football (NAIA, 1-A, 1-AA) but many powers that be said "no it's too much money",  "it will take 8-10 years".

Well it's 8 years later, I wish we had that option.  I still am of the belief Nova will end up better than us b/c of football.  Maybe even Georgetown

btw, Wisconsin is one of the largest states in the Union to not have 2 D1 teams.  There is a reason Whitewater is so good, there is a reason UW-Madison's walk on program is so strong.  We have opportunity in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin's neighbor to the west does not have more than one D1 football team either.

Litehouse

Maybe, maybe not.  I thought the same thing when all this was going on last year, but not any more.  Now it looks like there may be schools with long established football programs that are potentially going to be left out of this mess also.  Schools like Kansas, K-State, ISU, Mizzou, Baylor, TTech, Cincy, Louisville, WVU, USF, and TCU could end up getting really screwed.  If we started football 8 years would we be any better off than Memphis?  If Nova and GTown end up better than us, I think it will have more to do with their ability to deliver the Philly and DC markets than football.

GOO

Exactly. Having a crappy football program would probably put us in a worse position. All of a sudden having an expensive program with little revenue. We will most likely come out of this better than some football schools. What ND does could be key. I would think they'd go AAC before Big 10.  If they do something different, I hope we get brought along.

That's why the Gophers are so great!

We're not getting brought along to the ACC....just get that thought out of your head right now.

There is a reason Nova said "no" to upgrading their football program - and they had a good one.  They didn't meet FBS attendance criteria, likely needed a stadium, and the costs were prohibitive.  Adding a crappy football team would have done nothing but cost us resources that we currrently plow into the basketball program.

We are who we are - a private, urban university with a nice following, NBA area and proud tradition.  There are six other schools like us in our current conference.  Add Dayton, Xavier and Butler and you have a nice mix of eastern and midwestern schools very much like us.

Yeah, the bball only schools should just get it over with and make a conference.  It's inevitable.

DCWarriors04

As long as we stay wit Georgetown, Nova, and/or Notre Dame we'll be fine. It sucks to see the BEast break apart, especially since the BEast is equal to the ACC in football. Even if the leftovers of the Big 12 merge with the leftovers of the Big East, it could still be a respectable BBall conference with Kansas and Kansas State at least joining up with Georgetown, Nova, and us.

If the Big East really wants to survive...go after Texas and NOW.

I agree, it is the best way to protect ourselves.

Oh, and we aren't getting Texas.

No offense, they have 3-4 better suitors, and its stupid to think they would EVER choose the BEAST over them unless they got ALL the money.

GOO

I didn't mean we'd follow ND to the AAC. If they don't go AAC or Big 10... Maybe we will get involved with what ever they do with others such as Texas for all sports but football.

They'd have nothing to gain from a partnership with us.

Of course, but we screwed the pooch like we always do.  No football, terrible nickname, no medical school anymore, etc.   This shouldn't surprise anyone here.

WVU will now go to the SEC.  This idea of adding the Big 12 remaining schools to the Big East?  Hilarity.  If anything, you will see the remaining Big East football schools go to the Big 12.  Louisville, Cincinnati, TCU will all go to the Big 12 with Kansas, K-State, Missouri and Baylor.  Not the other way around.

It's finished boys, absolutely finished and many of us could have told you this was going to happen a decade ago, but MU has always been about the short term, not the long term.

Crean left for a reason.  He knew this stuff was coming.

No, actually I'm not.  Honestly, I'm surprised Buzz didn't leave this Summer for the same reason.  The writing has been on the wall for a long time.  Stability wins, and the Big East isn't stable.  If Buzz knew 5 months ago when he knows today, he would not be at Marquette as the head basketball coach.

Nova and Georgetown are both in a better position than Marquette is today because they have football, albeit not high level.  They have options.  Marquette has none.  We wait for the destruction to end and pick up the ball hope a court somewhere will have us.

Simple question is whether you would prefer to be in MU's shoes today or NOVA \ G'Town?  The answer seems clear to me, but maybe it isn't.

What is it exactly that's finished?

There were only three people in the world who knew that the President of the BIG EAST Executive Committee was secretly trying to destroy the conference: Tom Crean, Hoopalong and Chicos. If they had only told Buzz, we would have been booted from the conference and left with Terri Mitchell as our men's basketball coach.

How are Nova and Georgetown in better position than MU? What conference is going to add them because of their football programs?
