Good for DJ, good for Penn State, and I guess good for Phillycoach!

I agree with good wishes to the kid and school, but am left with the instinct Phillycoach shades more to the problem than to any solution.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Seems like the only loser in the whole deal is Southern Miss. which essentially was a rented uterus for a year.

Interesting.   Players don't usually transfer 'up', i.e. from CUSA to the B1?.    Must be a closer-to-home thing.   After getting lots of minutes and putting up decent #'s for a freshman.    Interesting.

Which puts MU fans in somewhat of an awkward position: Cheering for DJ when PSU is beating up on Bucky. ;)

PSU..isn't going to beat up on Bucky for a long time...Keep it real.

i would consider wilson to mu, and especially acker to mu, as transfering up

In both cases, a coaching change precipitated their move.

Newbill left USM high and dry about the same time of the year that MU did with him.  He must be used to looking for new schools at that time of year.

Hey, kid got crap on last summer and he made the best of a bad situation by excelling in his transition to Division I basketball. Can't get jealous of him advancing his potential.

You quoted me, but with your response, I am not sure why.  I was merely commenting about the coincidence in the timing.

Not many recruits transfer at this time of the calendar.  Oddly, there is an MU flavor to 3 - Mbakwe, Wilson and Newbill.

Best of luck to DJ, I'm curious as to what precipitated this. Simply a move closer to home? Family reasons? Homesick, like Wilson? Sidenote: how ironic would it be if Newbill transferred closer to home for the same reason Wilson's transfer bumped him out of Marquette? Bad situation at USM? Or was Phillycoach just not happy?

This kid's situation feels a bit like Maymon. A talented kid that might just be getting bad advice. I'm hoping it's not the case and that it works out for him, but the timing of this, especially in light of how he got bumped, seems rather odd.

GGGG

Im not sure what "bad advice" Newbill is getting.  He hooked on where he could after MU dumped him, and then transfered to a school in a bigger conference, closer to home.  Seems fine to me.

According to this article you hit it right on the head Brew. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq-pennstate/Newbill-transfers-to-Penn-State.html

"Penn State is not too far," said Newbill, who was didn't like being far away from home. "I can come and get away when I want to focus on me."

"He's going to be a big-time point guard," Adolphues said. "I compare him to Deron Williams. He's 6-4 point guard who can shoot the basketball and is an excellent teammate."

Good luck to newbill. Psu is not much of a basketball school but they have gotten a little better recently. I think Wilson will be a better player in te long run but I also think that newbill is going to be a better player than most people originally thought. His situation doesn't seem like maymons whatsoever in my eyes.

False.  Mbakwe left right before classes started.  Newbill left his school in August.  Wilson's announcement came in JUNE and was written on the wall for a long time before that.

Good luck to DJ Newbill.  I think he will end up with a nice college career and maybe even a shot at a pro career.

I realize some people are anal.  I stated time of the calendar - meaning later in summer.  Wilson's was announced June 30.  Newbill and Mbakwe in August.

Sorry you took it to mean the same day.   :o

I'm wondering if Larry Eustachey took DJ last summer knowing full well that he may not stay 4 years in Hattiesburg.  It was a quick signing and it helped both parties for a year and maybe DJ has known for awhile and told Eustachey that Southern Mississippi wasn't for him and as soon as Penn State hired the coach with a Phildalphia background, that was his ticket.  Many coaches wouldn't have granted a release like Eustachey did and a player usually doesn't make a decision this late unless it's been an issue for awhile.

DJ couldn't transfer to another Big East school and this new guy at Penn State may be just what the doctor ordered to get the Nittany Lion program into the recruiting market in Philly, New York, Washington D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

I'm very happy for DJ.  Great job turning around a situation that was less than ideal.

Kid had not much of a choice when he was left with no options at the breakup.  Hope he succeeds at Penn State.  Whole thing was not done well by MU.
