I had heard "he could of been a Katenda"

Hey, if Otule can play with one eye...
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

It would be great if Chris could get in touch with this kid and buck up his spirits. Good job by ND to stick with the offer.

Its good to see somthing classy from ND athletics.
"Marquette is so good defensively, they steal your mouth guards."

1) As much as I despise ND at times, I have to say I wouldn't have expected them pull the scholarship under these circumstances.  Credit due.

2) Granted CO plays with one eye, but he has had nearly his entire life to adjust.  Living for 18 years with two eyes and finding yourself with one is a huge deal (both vision-wise and lifestyle).  Being born with just one good eye... not as big of a deal after 21 years.

Heck, when I take my contacts out and put glasses on it screws up my depth perception for a little bit... I can't imagine what Eric is going through.

3) Not sure what to think about Brey's comment: "He understands the reality that playing basketball at the Big East level may never be part of the equation again."

Thanks for the honesty here, Mike, but could you be any more pessimistic in front of the media?  Something along the lines of "The reality for him is that playing basketball at the Big East level is going to be an even greater challenge now... we'll do everything we can to help him adjust, but we're going to see that he gets an education regardless" would have seemed less defeatist.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Then again, Brey may be just acknowledging what you are implying. If he is now suddenly and permanently blind in one eye, it will take a hell of an adjustment in his life, and there's really no way he'll make that adjustment within the window of BEast athletic scholarship. The article says that ND will find a way to still provide him a no-cost education (and I read that they imply that it won't be a b-ball scholarship, thereby saving them the loss of a player for four years).

Understandable and respectable, what ND is doing.

Maybe I'm just missing the humor, but when someone loses their vision permanently in one eye that does not seem to be an invitation to make a joke.

Sad circumstances for this young man.  Vision is so precious.

Neither the time nor the place for jokes. I wish Katenda the best, and hopefully he can find a way to rebound from this, even if he isn't able to pursue his basketball dreams.

He's still getting a full ride at a great university.  Even with 1 eye he can still play basketball better than I can.  I'd say his life is still going pretty well.

I get that, but if I suddenly lost an arm or an eye and had to give up my career (and I would in either case) I'd be pretty crushed, even though I realize there are other options out there. Just not really the time to make jokes at the kid's expense, I guess.

I get that.  I would be irritated if the joke was about the guy's sight moving forward, but it was just a pun about his name so it doesn't bother me as much.

I'm no arbiter of good-taste, though.  I've never been a good judge of where the line is and how far I'm past it :)

It was an inappropriate joke and reflects poorly on Marquette by that MU fan who made the joke.

A Marquette fan self righteous and humorless enough to get his undies in a bunch over an innocent pun reflects much worse. Get over yourself.
