Top 50 recruit wish list updated with 15 signees and 1 new huge prospect

Written by: jpudner@concentricgrasstops.com (bamamarquettefan1)

I had received requests for updates as some of the Top 50 on the recruiting wish list signed.  There has been a lot of activity the last few days, resulting in 15 of the 50 signing somewhere, including my #5 Keith Coleman needing two years of JUCO and my #2 Jarion Henry apparently going to New Mexico after tweeting about their "hotties."

However, perhaps the biggest news (thanks ATL MU WARRIOR) is I cannot ignore that a 7-foot, 4-star player from DJO's home town of Raleigh, NC, was just released from his commitment to NC State and easily becomes the 2nd biggest potential get besides Murray on the "wish list," and remember that's all this is.  Murray visits this weekend though he is reportedly leaning to Kansas or WVU.

I also added a team score to every player so you know how good a team the player was on last (150=Ohio State, 139=Marquette, 120=best JUCO school, 100=best prep school, St. Anthony's of New Jersey.)  These are all based on www.masseyratings.com, so please go contribute to his unbelievable work.  I listed all new signed players on the bottom, and Juan Anderson has led his California team to an 89 rating, meaning they are only 11 points worse than St. Anthony's.  The new 7-footer Joseph Uchebo also led his team to great success, as his 86 indicates they were only 14 points worse than St. Anthony's.  However, my #9, big man Yvan Ngirabakunzi, played for a high school with only a 22 rating, meaning maybe his competition was way to low to make the jump to the Big East, though he may if Central Florida is added.

And I hate to even put this out there if you are a geek like me, but the prep ratings were determined by going to http://www.highschoolsports.net/massey/matchup/Basketball/Varsity/Boys/, where you can find any two prep teams in the country and match them against each other.  I treated St. Anthony's as the 100 and gave each prep school above a rating by subtracting however many points they would be expected to lose to in a game against St. Anthony's.

You never know what to believe but ...

LaSalle's Murray likely choices Kansas, West Virginia
By Jon Rothstein
Special to CBSSports.com
April 17, 2011

LaSalle big man Aaric Murray is likely to transfer to either Kansas or West Virginia, several sources confirmed late Saturday night.

There is no timetable to when an official decision will be made.

The 6-foot-10 Murray will have two years of eligibility remaining but must sit out next season per NCAA rules.

The value of Murray to both the Jayhawks and the Mountaineers would be monumental. Should the power forward wind up with the Jayhawks, he would give Bill Self a ready-made product to step in for Thomas Robinson after next season when Robinson is expected to leave for the NBA.

Meanwhile, a marriage between Murray and the fans of Morgantown would give Bob Huggins an heir apparent to Kevin Jones at power forward.

Last season for LaSalle, Murray averaged 15.2 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game while notching seven double-doubles.

BCHoopster

If he does visit to MU, the players already at MU will have to make
a great impression, Kansas is tough to beat.  West Virginia not really.
There is a starting spot at all 3 schools.

Thanks for compiling these. Recruiting is such a rumor game...these analyses add some objectivity to the meat market. I know they are a lot of work but it brings a bit more clarity and added perspectives.

I think that there's every chance we could land Murray, though I'm not happy to hear Kansas jumping into the chase for him. I think that if he's going to commit to Marquette, we'll know by Monday or Tuesday. If he leaves Milwaukee without committing, our chances drop significantly.

DePaul and Oklahoma State don't really scare me from a recruiting perspective. Huggins can seal the deal, though, he's been doing this long enough. Honestly, if he doesn't come here, I hope he does go to Kansas, just to keep him out of the Big East.

After Murray, there are a couple realistic players I'd like, guys we've been mentioned with already...

  • Jeremy Jones would probably lead that list, a Chicago native and point, we are reportedly already in on him.
  • Charles Bennett would be the same class as Wilson, but he plays in Buzz's backyard (Houston Yates), can put up points, and is another 3-star point to give us options.
  • God's Gift Achiuwa hasn't been mentioned with us lately, but Buzz has sprung surprise JUCO names on us before, and this would be less of a surprise than Crowder was. The only question mark is the level of competition he faced at Erie CC.
  • AJ English's dad played in the NBA, and he also has a younger brother (Ajen, 2012 PG) who could follow him here; his father is looking at getting into coaching when his kids go off to college, and coach's kids tend to do well.
  • Gary Cooper hasn't caught a lot of services' eyes yet, but sounds like a solid under-the-radar guy, potentially the face-up 4 we're looking for.
  • Desmar Jackson was reportedly scouted by us before committing to Wyoming, would sit out a year, but could be an ideal DJO replacement after next year in case Mayo's not yet ready.
  • Tony Kimbro's father was a Parade All-American in high school, but never met the hype at Louisville, still would be nice to steal a Louisville kid in hopes that he could have the collegiate success that eluded his father (though I admit we don't need another 2/3 switchable).
  • Quevyn Winters is a Milwaukee native who drew criticism for allegedly throwing a punch at a ref a couple years back, but claims to have worked on his game and his self-control, seems like a high-major talent with serious question marks, has had interest in the past from Wisconsin, Marquette, K-State, Illinois, Baylor, and has a current offer from USF. Projects as a 6'5" player that can shoot and distribute, love the skillset, but questions, questions, questions...
  • Martyre Demarco would be strictly a project player as his quickness is questioned at the next level, but he is a point drawing interest from UConn, Arizona, and California, so there is probably something there, maybe a good option alongside Singleton as a reserve point.

Are we sure he is still interested in MU now that Kansas is in the mix?

Great info Brew city, but the one point you do no know is that with only 2 schoolies left, the players discussed maybe are
not as good as the 2012 potential recruits and secondly, Buzz only plays about 9 kids, so why have 13 next year?  The kid
is probably not going to play much anyway, that is why a transfer much like Wilson is a good idea. Murray really is perfect,
but can he buy into the work ethic?

He's visiting this upcoming weekend. I'm sure we'll have a much better idea where we stand come Monday or Tuesday of next week.

BCHoopster, I agree that Murray is perfect, and personally I really only want a "play-now" player if he's a point guard, as I think that's the one place we might need extra help in 2011-12. That's why I like Jones, and would really like Aaron Harwell from Centenary, who would be a sophomore that could play now because of their move to D3. But while we might have more names in line for 2012 than we can take, there's no sense in just wasting a 2011 scholarship. I'd sooner get someone in to see if they could blow up (like Cooper or Bennett) than just waste it.

IWB said on the Scout board that Marquette pulled out of the running for Murray, so I would guess the visit is history.

M'Baye transfers to Oklahoma from Wyoming.

Great additional notes.

On murray, I believe there are 2 scenarios:

1. If he really is set on kansas or wvu, he could easily cancel his trip this week, or

2) If he does get to campus you have to assume we have at least a 10 percent chance at him. Every kid is different, but some will view milwaukee and an nba area and the spanish o'donnell's as things that neither wvu or kansas can offer.

Did we pull out because he didn't seem that interested, or because we are zeroing in on someone else at this point?

All IWB said in the thread I saw was that we pulled out. Could be either or. My guess is maybe Buzz knew we weren't going to get him and decided to focus elsewhere, but either way, it's disappointing. There simply aren't that many other guys still out there to really get excited about, unless somehow TJ Taylor managed to wrangle a transfer to a D1 school.

GGGG

I actually like the idea of Juwan Staten.  He could come in and be a back up to Junior for his senior year, and then pretty much be our starting point for the next two years.

I'm not certain pulling out is the best way to go.

It worked for me back in the day but there were certainly some days/weeks where I worried it hadn't.

Well nothing's 100% effective, so pulling out certainly can't hurt.

Latest on Henry and New Mexico...strangely silent since all the initial excitement about his visit there. His other interest was Gtown who used the schollie for Porter.  USC and MU getting back in?

According to Henry's twitter account, he is announcing on Sunday and signing on Monday.  Oh and he apparently told some MU fan on twitter that he doesn't want to be a power forward.

Dammit, he's a switchable! SF/PF...need a say a "Maymon SG."

He'd get lots of touches at MU. But if he wants to be the "Man" he'd better go to a lower team in a BCS conference or mid-major.

Bank the scholarship for 2012.  Right now Buzz would be reaching for players who won't see any time as freshman next year or maybe not much time in the future either.

Forget that. Plenty of talent out there ranked about where Ox was last year.

Are there any players left who could beat out Chris Otule or Davante Gardner insde for minutes next year?  I'm very skeptical and Chris and Davante both have two or more years left.

Are there any players good enough to take minutes away from Crowder, Jamil Wilson, Williams, Jones and Anderson at forward next year and beyond?  Again, I'm very skeptical.

Any guards left who can get minutes next year with Cadougan, Johnson-Odom, Blue, Mayo and Derrick Wilson on the team?  Don't think so.

If you bank the scholarship, you balance the classes in 2012 and you can possibly get a center and either another point or a forward to go with Jamal Ferguson.
