Never bank scholarships.  Buzz knows what he's doing.

If there's nobody hot left (which isn't true yet) take a flyer on a kid.  If he doesn't work out he can xfer next year to free up a scholarship.

TedBaxter

I know that Buzz know's what he's doing and there isn't much out there right now.  I just watched some game video of one of the hottest names out there and he simply isn't good enough for a program like Marquette.

To be honest, I liked the Wyoming transfer M'Baye, but he opted for Oklahoma this weekend and I might take the Canadian kid who's leaving Louisiana Tech with one year left and immediate eligibility, but other than that, there just isn't anyone who I think is worth it, but that's me.

I don't want to cause problems and if Buzz finds someone who can help next year or later in his career, more power to him.

Even though, I think is right, Gary Cooper, or Jordan Latham would do fine. I know Latham has had problems with D-1 ball. Buzz could light the fire. Jeremy Jones is really good but how many 6-2 guards do we need?

I know nothing about you, nor care,

Ditto.

But I deleted my comment anyway.

The way I look at it, banking a scholarship doesn't help us at all. I know that for certain. We will have no benefit in 2011-12 with a scholarship that goes unused.

If we use a scholarship, it will most likely help us. I will agree to this level, I'm not certain that guys like Cooper, English, or Demarco would ever be good enough to contribute at Marquette. If we signed them, I'd hope so, but until we saw them, we couldn't be certain. I'm pretty confident that Uchebo or Staten would both help our program immensely, but I'm not sure if either is interested. And while there's been previous interest from Latham and Jackson, I realize they wouldn't give us anything on the court next season due to sitting out as transfers, and who knows if they'd still have interest?

But even if it's just extra bodies, that will help in practice. No, not all of these guys would see significant time next year. But what if there's an injury to Cadougan and Wilson isn't ready for D1 as a freshman? Are you confident that Singleton can man the point, or that Blue will be ready to be our primary 1-guard? That's where someone like Aaron Harwell or Jeremy Jones could be invaluable. Aaric Murray (even though we seem to be out of the running) and Latham may not be able to contribute on the court, but how much could they help Gardner and Otule simply by giving them more talented competition in practice?

The only possible worry is that we give the scholarship out to someone who will ruin the team chemistry. But Buzz seems to be pretty good at getting guys in that fit the character of his team, and I trust him in that regard.

While I fully realize just how nice it could be to have 2 schollies available for 2012 (dreams of Jarnell Stokes and Je'lon Hornbeak) that only helps us if they sign, and even if we took a flyer on AJ English and it didn't work out, he can transfer. It may not be the most tasteful of ideas, but it's the business of NCAA basketball.

TedBaxter

Desmar Jackson is going to Southern Illinois and last fall Gary Cooper was talked about as an academic risk.  Have not seen Jeremy Jones mentioned with Marquette for awhile.

Furthermore, who knows what could happen between now and next year.  We've had at least one transfer out every year.  I hope he comes, but Furguson still has a ways to go before he can sign.  There is just so much up in the air.

It's not that easy to find more quality players whose first names start with "J".  Especially big men.

Nice post.

If "Marquette has be in touch as of late" my guess is that Buzz is using him as a back-up plan.

TedBaxter

Henton is the player I watched game footage of last night and didn't think he was good enough and I know he has the stats and was runnerup for Michigan Mr. Basketball.  Just don't think he is the fit currently for Marquette as both Jamil Wilson and Juan Anderson are better.

Update from this week anyway.

Wish we had better access to what's really going on with Marquette's recruiting process.  I know it probably has to be handled very tactfully by Buzz and the coaching staff, but it's really fascinating reading.  Really, really hope we are able to sign an athletic "big" this spring!

Ted, looking at Henton, might he be able to play the 4? While talent seems to dictate Wilson and Anderson may well be playing together by 2012-13, could Henton maybe come in as another undersized post like Lazar and Crowder? Just a thought, because those rebounding numbers are scary, and Michigan typically has a few decent high-majors.

I will certainly not be surprised if Buzz announces someone not even on this list.

But assuming Murray is KU or WVU, and Henry announces on Easter Sunday that he is going to New Mexico, I believe what's left of my top 50 list is below.  I knew #35 Sanchez was a freshman, but can't a JUCO freshman choose to transfer like Jimmy Butler did to have three years at a four-year school?  My thought was he looked good enough as a freshman that maybe we could grab him this year before he explodes and everyone is after him next year.

Only if they were a full academic qualifier out of high school like Butler was.

brewcity77

Has anyone else been following Jarion Henry's exploits of late? Honestly, I'm not sure I want him here anymore. His Twitter account seems to be about nothing but getting laid by as many women as possible and extolling how he's the greatest thing to ever happen to basketball. I'm all for confident players, but this guy just seems arrogant. He came out with a video on YouTube last week in which he called for all black girls to "get together" with him, and then declared to whichever school he attends that he's "one and done, I'm going to the League. Remember I said this, I'm one and done."

He may be a great talent, but is he any better than Jamil Wilson, Juan Anderson, or Jamail Jones? I have no idea where he will announce tonight. Maybe it ends up being Marquette. But after all the stuff I've read about him and from him in the past two weeks, I honestly hope it isn't.

GGGG

Yeah, there are actually some columnists in New Mexico suggesting that Alford pass on him.

marquette99

Sultan - thanks for explaining the juco deal.  I get it now, if a player just went to juco to get his basketball skills up to d1 he can come out if he explodes freshman year, but most are there to get their academics up, so he probably has another juco year.
