I lived in apt 202 at 808 N 24th for two years....73 and 74....was I shocked to learn that the place became famous because Dahmer lived in the same building some years later. It was a nice place back then with basement heated parking.

There's been a few threads about West (or that talked about it).  For the kiddos this thread has some good history lessons in it...

I remember tour guides telling stories about how, after West was closed, students would sneak into the building and use the swimming pool (on a top floor).

Is that true?

Yup, that's my math for you. 27-13 is definitely not 16, as in 16th in Wisconsin, which is what I was shooting for   ?-(

The distance from 27th to 16th is only .75 miles which is equal to 6 city blocks....not really that far at all.

And FWIW, West was actually at 26th Street (2611 West Wisconsin)...not 27th Street.  My room was the corner room overlooking the 26th/Wisconsin intersection.  If you made it to 27th Street, you went to far.  I think I could probably count on one hand the number of times I actually went past West and down to 27th.  I know there was a store over there, but I almost never went there.  I can't recall what was next door to West before you got to 27th (if anything - but I don't think West filled that entire block).

I lived at 22 and wisconsin junior and senior year. One of my favorite stories I tell people about life in the hood goes like this: one day between working for the mu grounds crew and class I went home to shower and change. I walk up to my apartments foyer only to see two figures one sitting on the front steps and the other kneeling and bobbing their head. It only took me a second to figure out what was going on. I must have been in a bad mood or in a hurry that day because I bust in through the door and screamed get the f out! The guy looked very pissed he coulnt finish and the crack whore just looked embarrased I guess. He calmed down and pleaded with me not to call the cops which I agreed to.
