What is your favorite Al McGuire quote?

dgies9156

Al must have seen Vander when he said...

"The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores."

Vander... you're wonderful and we expect great things as you mature!

"The world is run by C students"

Jesuits take a vow of poverty and they expect everybody else to keep it.

After a new Marquette president asked him to schedule a game against a school where a friend of his was president...Father, I don't take confession and you don't run the basketball team.

MUMac

Not sure of the exact quote, but to paraphrase:  "When you graduate from college, spend six months as a cab driver and six months as a bartender.  Then you will be fully educated."

Marqevans

To win a championship you need an "aircraft carrier in the middle" and if you "cut off the head the body dies". Referring to stopping the other teams best player.  Much the way Butler cut the head off Holloway in the Xavier game.

If the waitress has dirty ankles, the chili must be good.

Mike the Red

Any jackass can kick a dead lion; but he better be sure that it's dead.

Henry Sugar

Winning is overrated. The only time it is really important is in surgery and war.

All love affairs end. Eventually the girl is gonna put curlers in her hair.

I'm an Einstein of the streets and an Oxford scholar of common sense.

You know what pressure is? It's when the cheerleaders are jumping and you don't notice their breasts.
A warrior is an empowered and compassionate protector of others.

Marqus Howard

"I went into a restaurant one night and ordered lobster, and the waiter brought me one with a claw missing. I called him over and told him about it. He told me that in the back there's a tank they keep the lobsters in and while they're in there, they fight and sometimes one loses a claw. I told him 'then bring me a winner.'"

Rudy

"A Notre Dame grad will pick his nose so you'll see his ring."

oshkoshbgosh

When asked why his son Allie was starting over a very talented George Frazier he responded, "because I'm sleeping with his mother."

Dr. Blackheart

"I don't know why people question the academic training of an athlete. Fifty percent of the doctors in this country graduated in the bottom half of their classes."

Long ago & far way I did volunteer work for MU at games. Among the things I did was pass out half time stats. I was on the floor of the old Arena when Al walked past. He was never great with names. He looked at me for a second & said "hey kid...." followed by a reaching for the ditto mastered page. Small moment but it was directed at me.    ;)

This is so true, not just about coaching, but any career/job, life:
"The nicest thing about coaching is that one day you feel like you can play handball against a curb and on other days you feel like you can fly to the moon."

I think I heard/remember it as something like win and you feel like you can fly to the moon, loose and you feel like you can play handball against a curb.

So, did Al notice the cheerleaders?

Hoos for real

When he called a junior at Carolina in 1983 that he was "the best basketball player, college or pro."  He was the first to call MJ the best.

Hoos for real

My other favorite was whenever a ball handler was fouled, he'd always say, "too much hands."

When Jim Chones signed a pro contract right before the NCAA tournament Al said, "I looked at my refrigerator and then I looked at his refrigerator. Something to that effect.

"My rule was I wouldn't recruit a kid if he had grass in front of his house. That's not my world. My world was a cracked sidewalk." —Al McGuire
