Can somebody explain to me how a kid that goes to NDP or now St. Johns military gets to play
4 years in college after the year at the prep school.  These are really glorified junior colleges?
So why not 3 years, in makes no sense.  Sure it is good for the kid, he improves his stock, gets
a better offer, but... secondly, was Todd Mayo recruitable out of high school, did he have the
grades???  What was his reason for going to NDP?

GGGG

They aren't junior colleges.  They are prep high schools.  I'm not sure if he went for basketball reasons or grades.  He was at a ho-hum high school in suburban Memphis before going there.

Uhhhmmm.. not really a ho-hum high school, actually a pretty good one.  His backcourt buddy his 'first senior year' at Germantown was Austin Hollins (son of Lionel) who is a frosh at Minnesota.

Yet lost in the first round of the Tennessee state tournament by 20+ points.

Huh?  Are you comparing this year's team to last year's team?  Schools can fall off quickly, bro.  Just look at I4.  Germantown was a solid team when Mayo was there.

Some of these prep schools are diploma mills.  One could strong argue where Mbao attended out here in Simi Valley fit that bill.  Other prep schools are just that, preparatory schools for college and no issues with the NCAA Clearing House.

wyzgy

david cubillan came from st. benedicts prep of new jersey, but they only mention a fith year as one needed to complete requirements for graduation. i don't think they can play 5 years of ball??

No.  In the 2010 tournament, Germantown lost by 20 in the first round.

Which one is ND Prep?

Hayward went there and Crean recruited him. Therefore, it couldn't possibly be the former.  Only Buzz recruits from diploma mills.

This is the latest list.  It has changed several times since 2006

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Student-Athlete+Experience/Non-Eligible+High+Schools

Junior Cadougan's school, God's Academy is currently not recognized by the NCAA.  Again, I'm just presenting a fact but I'm sure this will be attacked.  At the time of JC's recruitment, it was certified but has been added to the list of no-no's for 2010 by the NCAA.

EDIT:  Incorrect on my part.  JC did not attend God's Academy.  Edited to reflect such.  He attended Christian Life Academy.

Instead it was Yous Mbao's school, Stoneridge Prep that was originally on the "inactive" list by the NCAA and labeled a Diploma Mill by the Washington Post in their 2006 investigation. Later they were further scrutinized by HBO's Real Time with Bryant Gumbel.  They were later certified.  Stoneridge has quite a reputation in these parts as the CIF has had to rule them ineligible several times in the Southern Section for using ineligible players.

Again, my apologies for getting the wrong player and school.  Hopefully that clears it up.

Cadougan played at Christian Life Acadamy in Humble, TX.

Care to retract your "fact?"

DomJamesToTheBasket

I believe most of the prep schools that have a history of sending players DI are "diploma mills."  Their players either had the grades,  but want another chance to catch coaches' eyes or don't have the grades and use the year to become eligible.  Personally.  I don't find a problem with it.  Your whole life is ahead of you still!  I'm sure Lazar is happy with the route he took! :)

WOW!!  A false "fact" that casts a bad light on a player Buzz Williams recruited.  Hard to believe.
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

Thank you kindly.  My fault...I am wrong (ners, take note).  I will edit appropriately.

Ners, unfortunately Mbao's school was on the list several years ago.  One out of two ain't bad.

DomJamesToTheBasket

On a side note:  It's too bad Jimmy didn't go to prep school,  rather than JUCO and lose a year of eligibility.  He is a year younger than his class and could have REALLY shined as a 22 year old senior!

Totally agree!  Vander is also a year younger than his class.  He could/should be a high school senior right now, but people rip on him for "only" looking good against weaker Division I opponents.  Laughable!

I never realized Vander was that young!  I think he would still normally be in the same class,  but clearly on the young side.  He definitely has a bright future.....a long,  intuitive player with many skills.  Tons of upside!

I never really fully understood why some choose JC over Prep.  Part of it is grades, but the question about Jimmy Butler got me questionning it.  I know that Butler addressed this one time, might have been money, I can't recall.

Here is an interesting article.  Careful, though, it has a more positive spin than chico's would like.

Players that were more than a year older than Blue as freshmen:

Diener
Novak
Hayward

Players that were 10 months older than Blue as freshmen:

Matthews
James

They were all playing for their high school championships while Blue was competing for a Big East championship and facing the toughest schedule in MU's past 30 years.  Weird that he might be struggling a bit.  If he still doesn't "get it" by the end of his junior year then maybe that's a fair indictment of his game.  The people calling him a bust at this point couldn't have less of a clue.

It is laughable. Because he didn't look good against them either.

It's gotta be money.  I can't think of another reason not to give that a shot before going the JUCO route.

BCHoopster

Vander I am sure has learned what his weaknesses are!  It is a matter of working on them
this summer, get in the gym and shoot 500 shots a day.  Buzz has stated that Vander works
hard at trying to get better, so I expect Vander to be much improved next year.  If not, Todd
Mayo will get some PT time next year.

Really?  So 11.9 points, 3.2 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals on 52% FG's, 61%  FT's and 30% 3FG against the pre-conference kenpom 90+ teams as the 4th option doesn't count as "good" in your book?  This includes a huge three pointer in what turned out to be a crucial win against Bucknell.  At the age where Diener, Novak, Hayward, Matthews, and James were intra-squad scrimmaging before their high school seasons even began.
