Committee Mistakes
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:11:39 PM »

Here you go:

Purdue (9): this team didn't deserve a bid, let alone a 9
Duke (6)
Indiana (7): the Big 10 got way, way too much love
USC (5): great conference, but their resume doesn't warrant a 5
Vanderbilt (6): 8 at best, maybe a 9/10
Virginia (4): if it wasn't for unbalanced schedule, they're staring at .500

In general, if there was ever a year, this is the year that there should have been more mid-majors.  Majors are generally down and look at the showing last year.

Syracuse has a pretty big beef too.

Purdue deserved a bid; granted, not a 9, but were certainly more deserving than Illinois.

Virginia (4)-RPI of 55 and lost three of last five to NC State, Miami, and Wake Forest.  Pays to have Craig Littlepage on the committee.

Illinois (12)-ZERO business being in this field.  Nice computer numbers, but an absolute crap team if you watch them on the court.  Probably got in because they dumped Chief Illiniwek.

Duke (6)-Solid RPI and SOS.  But lost their last 3, and finished 8-9 in the ACC including their conference tournament.  Did Coach K get high-limit AMEX cards for the committee or something?

Southern California (5)-5th place in Pac 10 with RPI of 40.  Best non-conference win vs. George Washington.  Guys, O.J. Mayo is not elgiable for another year.

UNLV (7)-RPI of 10, 10-4 vs. the RPI Top 100, and won 9 of their last 10.  Got hosed almost as bad as MU did.

Vanderbilt (6):  RPI of 47.  10-6 vs. the RPI top 100, but 5-8 on the road.
The General has taken on a new command.

Just to add to the screw job...Syracuse didn't even get a #1 seed in the NIT.  Not that it matters that much, but you'd think they would at least have been rewarded with a top seed after being shafted by the NCAA.

You have to include Butler as a 5 being a mistake...it's unbelivable.  They got hot and won a preseason tournament before Notre Dame stepped up their game and against Indiana and what would prove to be overrated Tennessee and Gonzaga teams.  Impressive wins, yes.  But they are their only impressive wins. If Butler were a team from a major conference their loses to Indiana State, Illinois-Chicago, Loyola (Ill.), and Wright State twice would kill their tournament resume.  Not to mention they finished second in the Horizon League in both the regular season and tournament.  They had a chance to prove they were still a strong team late in the year when they played SIU at home, and they lost.  Any major conference team and you're looking at an 11 or 12 seed if they're even included.

Compare MU to Butler.  Wins vs. Duke, vs. Texas Tech, at Louisville, at Pitt, vs. Pitt, vs. Villanova.  Besides NDSU, our losses have a little more credibility than the Indiana States of the world.

Also compare Butler to last year's George Washington.  GW, at 26-2, was given a #8 seed in the same region as #1 overall Duke on a day when they were rated the #11/#14 team in the polls.  Most people had them as a 3 or 4 seed.  They had losses at ranked NC State and a slip-up against Temple in their conference tournament.  Beating a ranked Maryland team and running the table in the regular season in the Colonial seems more impressive to me than getting hot in a preseason tournament and then losing 4 games in the Horizon League.

Also, as a kind-of mistake, the NIT decided to kick Syracuse when they were down, naming West Virginia, Air Force, Mississippi State, and Clemson as the #1 seeds and Cuse a #2.

I see someone included UNLV below, and granted they are in Chicago, but Wisconsin can't be too thrilled with their potential second round opponents. I think both of those teams are seeded too low, and I believe there is a very good chance that both MU and UW's seasons will be over a week from today.

Vandy is the most over-seeded team in this field......nothing about their profile screams 6 seed.
It should have been Purdue or Illinois, not both
It appears that the committee didnt get out and see teams play --- they seemed to rely just on the numbers and stats
In aggregate the Big East was hosed.
Maryland as a 4 seed is a gift.  Two losses to Miami didnt mean a thing.
Indiana as a 7......well, I covered that on the blog, they suck
