In the ESPNU "Revealed" about MU last night, near the end Buzz said:

Our teams have always been slow in November and December.  We got beat by Dayton my first year because we don't run 42,000 set plays like most teams.  So we're teaching you guys how to play ... get to the drift ... get it to the field ... get it to the second side ... attack from the baseline ...

When you get to January and February, plays will not win you games, players will win you games.

So who runs 42,000 set plays?

Now I know Buzz was not speaking about Crean, I know they are good friends and talk regularly, but isn't he describing Crean's approach?

I think he's describing a lot of coaches' approach and simply stating that his approach is a little different. I don't think it was meant as a slight toward anyone.

I4 actually has 78,491 set plays.

The most dramatic is the Thrown Potted Plant Play. The most devastating is the Sorry Son but you've been Creaned move.

I was at that Dayton game in Chicago right after Thanksgiving. Gregory had his team prepared and our seniors were not. Our players were lost, especially defensively. Buzz was definitely out coached that night, I said it at the time. We had so much more talent. I was really questioning our coaching decision after that game. I suspect others were as well.  I think he was referring to Gregory more than Crean.

I find it difficult to criticize anything Buzz does offensively.  Both last year and this year we have had clunkers on the offensive end early, but we get the ball rolling and things end up just fine offensively.

That game was awful in every respect. The team didn't come to play, and MU's crowd didn't show up, and the ones that did were awful quiet, although the team didn't provide much to cheer for. Huge letdown.

First off, I love those Marquette Revealed things.  They are tremendous.

That's why, though I get furious when we do things like blow 18 points leads with 5 1/2 minutes to go, I can't get too angry at those kids, because the time and effort that they put in to being the best that they can be (from Buzz on down to Frozena) is inspirational.

I think Buzz's point with the reference comment was simply that his coaching staff teaches offensive principles, like floor spacing, etc. rather than a lot of scripted plays, and that philosophy hurts MU early in the season as their players are just learning how to play together.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

Fullodds

The night before MU blew the doors off a pretty good Northern Iowa team (winning by 20 or 30).  They came out the next night against Dayton and expected the same and were not ready to compete.  Dayton was ready and won.

A lot of coaches don't run any set plays.  Bobby Knight never did...or at least rarely did.

I didn't see the program but was Buzz condoning his style by suggesting its ok to start off slow because they get better at the end of the year?  Buzz needs to make changes if he recognizes his style causes us to lose games early. i

No what he is saying that motion offenses, because of their free-flow, take time to develop because players haven't played together enough.  Once they play together and are more comfortable with one another, that is when they are most effective.

Buzz's freelance offense takes familiarity with each other.  I see his point.  We looked like we were running around like a chicken with its head cut off in Kansas City.  No one knew what to do and most fans just blamed Buycks.  Now they are looking better.

I like building up to the end of the season.  Generally, the team is playing good ball in Feb/March.  I think in the Amigos year he did a good job of it.  DJ got hurt and we probably should have beaten Mizzou anyway.  Last year, we finished relatively strong with a big win v. Louisville and some nice wins at the Garden.  That team overacheived in my opinion.

Let's hope this team comes together and finishes strong.  After these next four games, MU can really make a strong push.  I still think this is a team that has the talent to make the Sweet 16.

If you looked at the team makeup pre season, you should have expected what we have gotten.  This team is getting better, and will be playing their best hoop in February.

I detest these type of analysis.  This is I often quip that MU has never lost a game in out 110 year history.  Either we win or our stupid coach blew it.  So, we never lose, just have bond-headed coaches.

You realize that their is another team on the court and they are trying to win too.  Sometimes they actually do things correctly.  Not every point they score is our team getting out coached.
