Apparently the idea of playing point guard isn't that big a deal since it is talked about openly in this article.  One thing that I thought was odd was that it says he has 3.5 years of eligibility left.  That can't be right as a mid-season transfer right?  Everything I have read states that a mid-season transfer cannot spread out a redshirt over two different seasons.  He only has 2.5 years left.

My guess is Reggie was indicating that he still will have 3.5 years on his five-year clock in which to use his remaining eligibility.

Interesting that he went to a Lon Kruger team.  I had thought that Kruger and Mike Irvin didn't really get along from his days at Illinois.

The point was made in LV that Kruger had recruited some Irvin players and although he didn't get any, he made a positive impression about the Rebel's program.

MY GUESS is Reggie is not smart enough to realize he won't have 3.5 yrs of eligibility left.  Very poor decision to transfer mid-season. 


If he begins playing at the semester break in 2011-12, he will have 2.5 yrs to play.  If he waits for the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, he will have 3 full yrs.  Under no circumstance will he have 3.5 yrs remaining.

I don't know him personally, I can only judge him by his actions.
His poor decision-making speaks for itself. 

FWIW, I don't wish well for any early or mid-season deserters (Mbakwe, Maymon and now Smith).

It would have been 'classy' for him to finish up the season with the teammates and coaches who are depending on him.

I don't disagree with you on that (in reading it as akin to fulfilling a contract), but at the same time it is the best decision for him and Marquette basketball.
- He's not going to see the floor, knowing that he's leaving at the end of the year.
- I can't see him competing in practice with his teammates.

Even if he held off announcing the intention to transfer, you can't really think that his heart would be in it.   

I am a huge supporter of fulfilling obligations.  Even more so with adults (read coaches).  But I think this is a win for everyone ultimately.

Reading this article about needing to get away from home makes me wonder if he was subject to some bad influences from his high school and neighborhood crowd and that Milwaukee just was not far away enough.  There is definitely something going on here that only he and the coaching staff know about.  Good luck Reggie!

Makes no difference to me that he is transfering.  I never thought he was very good anyway, his shot will probably never develop becuase of his poor mechanics, so I doubt he has much success in the future at UNLV.  I can't say I want him to do well because that would just be a huge lie.

Reggie already has a better shot and mechanics and upside potential than does Junior Cadougan.  We actually saw Reggie score from the field and make some 3's during game action.  Reggie will be a good player at UNLV, without a doubt.

Some people on this board are highly confused between "seasons of competition" of which you get four, and the 10-semester/five-year clock.

Reggie has used one of his four seasons. He only has three left. That is the end of the story on seasons of competition.

After sitting out his residency requirement (two semesters), he will have 7 semesters (or 3.5 years) in which to use his remaining three seasons of competition.

"Years of eligibility" can be a vague term, and we are spending lots of time in these threads arguing over the semantics that can be avoided by using precise language.

It looks like you are right. I just checked Maymon's status and he is listed as a sophomore. Given that he will end up playing 7 semesters instead of 8.  Both Smith and Maymon must have really been miserable at MU to be willing to lose a half of season of playing time (either that or they are stupid).  However, Maymon probably believed he be in the NBA before his eligibility was up so losing half a season would not matter to him.
