The Love House

Apologies in advance if this has been discussed already (I searched but couldn't find a thread) but I caught a quote on the jsonline.com website that "Wilson will miss the remainder of the season while he deals with eligibility issues". It was posted on 1/1/11. Here is the link (refer to the 'Injuries" section)...

http://jsonline.sportsdirectinc.com/basketball/ncaab-teams.aspx?page=/data/ncaab/teams/team2406.html

I also found another web site that makes reference to it...

http://www.donbest.com/ncaab/injuries/

I realize that he is redshirting, therefore it's not a concern from a roster standpoint for this season, but I am wondering if there are any issues as far as next year, i.e., if a student athlete becomes academically ineligible during a redshirt "year", does the redshirt "year" temporarily toll during the period of ineligibility?  If so, would his redshirt year then carry over to next semester? I'm also concerned to a lesser extent that, if true, he is precluded from practicing with his teammates the rest of this season. So, can anyone answer these questions:

1) Is he actually academically ineligible this semester or I am just misinterpreting something?
2) If he is ineligible, and assuming he is able to rectify his grades, will this have any carry-over affect on his availability for the first semester next year?

Thanks

🏀

He's ineligible due to transferring, I have not heard anything about grades, so no worries.

Quite simply, Jamil is not eligible this season as he is a transfer.  thats what the site is trying to say ineloquently.  Jamil has been warming up with the team in the early warmups before games at the BC, including prior to the WVU game on 1/1.

GGGG

If you look at other names on that site with "eligibility" as a reason, such as Kenny Kadji, they are all due to transfer.  But I admit "dealing with eligibility issues" is a strange way to put it.  Just say "ineligible due to transfer."

The Love House

I understand that he's required to sit out a year due to the transfer, but there seems to be more to it than that this semester. For instance, if you look at the DonBest.com page, the 'injury' column for those who are redshirting says "none", and the 'status' column specifically mentions the word "redshirt". This is true even for Dave Singleton who also transferred. However, Wilson's columns read "eligibility" and "out for season". Additionally, the jsonline column mentions "eligibility issues", not redshirting. And both pages were updated recently.

The fact that he was warming up with the team before the 1/1 game is not dispositive because the second semester had not technically started yet, if indeed that is the semester for which he is not academically eligible. I guess we'll just have to wait to see. Hopefully I'm wrong...

T-Bone

Well, they don't have Singleton listed there.  So, I'm guessing we won't see his dapper sweaters on the bench the rest of the season.

What will hurt is if he isn't allowed to practice, which would be the case.

We'll see.
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.

The Donbest site just uses the information the schools provide.  They do show "academics" for those who are struggling with that.

Anyway, Wilson has never had academic issues before.  Let's not read too much into this.

I just googled the first five players that are listed as "eligibility" and "out for season" or "out indefinitely" and all were transfers.  I also noticed that some specifically say "academically ineligible."
Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Looks like Jamil is fine then. Just out of curiosity though, if a guy has to sit out two semesters as a redshirt before he can play, but he becomes academically ineligible for one of those semesters, does it still count? Anyone know?

GGGG

Yes, even if he were academically ineligible this semester, he would still have three full years beginning next year.

Singleton was at the end of the bench at Rutgers, sweater and all...Not sure why, since redshirts don't travel with the team...

It's a 2-2.5 hour drive from his home in Coatesville, PA to Rutgers.

Great to see Dave make the drive to support the guys.

Plus he's got a cousin in New Brunswick that I met after the game.

He's not redshirting...he's redsweatering. There's different rules for those guys.

jsglow

I do have to say that our 'red sweater' guys look awesome on the bench.  And JW is TOTALLY into every game; every possession.  He'll be a very nice addition next year kind of taking JFB's spot.
