.....Randy Edsall pulling a Tom Crean and leaving UConn for Maryland.  (And I'm not trying to stir anything up.)  He didn't travel back to Connecticut with the team after the Fiesta Bowl and instead flew to Maryland.  After the story broke he told the team in a teleconference.  Not one of the players nor any of the school administrators had any idea he was out the door. 

Most fans and students and sportswriters are saying it's his right to leave and have no issue with him deciding to move on, but are pissed that someone who preaches family & team etc., disapperared in the middle of the night and only informs the team in a teleconference.  It sounded all too familiar.

As Collin Cowherd said this morning, don't EVER believe what a coach says.  If they say they are there forever, call BS.  If they say they will be there as long as the school will have them, believe the opposite.  Etc, etc.

Certainly the way TC, Edsell, Ben Howland, and hundreds of others have done it over the years is not ideal.  I've spoken to a few of the hiring AD's that indicate they literally force the coaches into these moves sometimes because they don't want the coach to be back "home" surrounded by the old school to have them change their mind.  They pick them up, get them over, hammer out the final details have them sign immediately. 

Not all schools do this, but talk to enough AD's and they will tell them that the last thing they want is to offer a coach a job, have them go back and then turn them down, makes the hiring school look bad.  So they, in essence, deploy this tactic which often leads to the announcements that we've seen over and over again.

Unfortunate for everyone.   It's also why I don't believe most things that come out of coaches mouths when it comes to loyalty, dream job, blah blah blah.  When I was younger I bought into that stuff, but not anymore.

I never believe them either.  While it seems there are a few coaches who want to remain in their current jobs forever, I've seen enough profess their undying loyalty and then leave that I never believe it.

Maybe Buzz is an exception.  I hope he is.  I hope he really does stay as long as Marquette will have him - and I hope that he is so successful that it is a long, long time.  But, if he leaves before getting fired, I predict he'll justify it saying that it was the right move for his family.  Just like he did when he left New Orleans.  And I'm not suggesting that it will be untrue (or that it was untrue when he left UNO).  If Buzz genuinely becomes convinced that it would be better for his family if he was coaching at Texas A&M (to pull a name out of a hat), I would expect him to go.  It would be fully consistent with everything I've ever heard from him (aside from "I'll be here as long as they'll have me", of course).  

I respect the hell out of Buzz as a person.  If he's the person I think he is, he'd leave Marquette in a heartbeat if he thought that was the best thing for his family.

Edited to add that if he did leave, I honestly believe that he'd agonize over the decision.  I also would be extremely surprised if he left like Crean did without even talking to his team.

To make Edsall's situation even more egregious, I read somewhere (sorry, don't have link) that he forced a guy who is leaving early to get up in front of the team and tell them that in the post-game locker rooml. The implication from the quote I saw is that this kid was bailing on his teammates, so he made the player get up in front of them all and tell them. The players then later find out Edsall bailed on them. Brutal if true.

Probably running back Jordan Todman.  He was the second leading rusher in the NCAA this year and declared he was going pro after the Fiesta Bowl.

Wow that is brutal.  Even if he hadn't also been leaving the team it seems to me that he was still in the wrong trying to call out that player.  I don't think that any of the other players could blame a guy for leaving for the draft if he thinks that he can make it.  Most guys are going to make that choice no matter how much they like their team.

Pitt fans are truly some of the most obnoxous fans there are.  I don't necessarily remember Howland getting skewered, but if he did, it was completely uncalled for.  Howland is from Santa Barbara, UCLA fan growing up, worked as an assistant at Cal Santa Barbara, tried to get coaching jobs at Loyola Mmt and UC Irvine (all before going to Pitt), and parents back in the area.  Not to mention that UCLA's program is the pinnacle of mens college bball.  Interviewed for the UCLA job on a weeked, thought about it for a few days, then had a press conference on a late in the week being introduced as coach.  Can't blame the guy for making that move, though I'm sure Pitt fans could.

The original post makes it sound like all MU fans were upset that Tommy Naismith left Marquette.

When in fact a percentage of us were elated.  Some were upset with the way that he left, while others of us saw it as just another confirmation that the man had no character whatsoever, and were not surprised by his actions at all.
