Bettie Page did not graduate from Vanderbilt.  She briefly attended Peabody Teacher's College.  Many years later, Vandy arranged an "affiliation" with Peabody wherein their students could attend classes there.  Coincidentally (I am sure), a significant number of those students were scholarship athletes who weren't up to the academic rigor of a Vanderbilt education.  When Peabody ran into financial difficulty in the late 70's, Vanderbilt quickly merged with them.

Ironically, for years Vandy has whined that they couldn't compete effectively with the rest of the SEC because of their high academic standards.  But once Peabody (and its lower expectations)  went away, Vandy's sports programs have improved markedly.

In a related note, Bettie Page attended the same high school as another famous Vandy alum whom I don't believe has been mentioned yet - Dinah Shore.

Vanderbilt always has been competitive in basketball. Dating back to the 1960s, they were an upper eschelon SEC team, which was tough to do in an era where Adolph the Bigot and his Kentucky Wildcats dominated the conference. Vanderbilt had an excellent team in the late 1960s through the mid-1970s and played us once in the NCAAs -- in 1974 when we marched our way to the NCAA Championship game.

Some of the school's stars included Jan van Bredakopf (spelling??), who was son of NBA Coach Butch van Bredakopf, the "F" Troop -- Joe Ford, Jeff Fosnes and Butch Feher -- Will Perdue, who played for the Chicago Bulls, Terry Compton and Tommy Hagen.

Vanderbilt also desegregated SEC Basketball when it offered Perry Wallace, who played high school ball for Nashville Pearl, a scholarship in 1967. Wallace was a good center and paved the way for a diverse and frankly much better SEC.

I remember the "F" Troop quite well.  I went to high school a block away from Vanderbilt, and that was their heyday.  We would play our important football games in its stadium.

Relative to  football, their basketball team was decent.  For years, Vandy and Northwestern were neck and neck for the title of suckiest major D1 football program.

The Peabody School of Education at Vanderbilt is one of the top ranked in the country.  In many polls, it's number 1. 

Speaking of their rigorous academics, Festus Ezeli switched his major this past year from Pre-Med, to Economics, so that he could balance more time with basketball.

Bomb Squad, Memorial Magic, Barry Goheen, Barry Booker etc...had some nice memories.

Father Ryan moved from 2300 Elliston Place about 15 years ago. They were one block north of West End Avenue in the shadows of Vanderbilt's athletic and residence hall complexes.

Class of 1974 here. My sister was Class of 1979. Lived in West Meade and Madison (TN) from 1961 until I went to Marquette in 1974. I grew up on Vanderbilt basketball. I hated last night more than you can imagine because I had some VU grads from Nashville at the game with me.

I loved Vandy basketball until I discovered Al and my Dad actually hired a couple of Vanderbilt's all-time greats!
