2 things:

1st, yes it is possible to be that young.  I was 17 when i was a freshman at Marquette.  There was also a kid on my wing that was the same birthday but one year younger, so he was 16 as a freshman.  now that's impressive

2nd, this isn't something earth shattering.  back in 7th grade ('95-'96) we played a team where a kid hit his head on the underside of the backboard.  which mean he got up a lot higher than just dunking.  i can't remember the kids name, but i think he wound up playing d3 basketball somewhere.  just because a kid can dunk early, doesn't mean he's the next kobe.

+1  I was young for my grade as well, not quite as young as this, but still graduated high school at 17.  Also, I could get rim in 7th grade and I am by no means or have ever been a "great athlete," so somehow I don't find this all that stunning or Earth shattering either??

I simply stated that I could get rim and the fact I'm not a great athlete to show that I don't doubt there are other kids out there there were (when I was in 7th grade) better than me and could jump better than me or currently are better than I was.  A teammate on my youth team could dunk in 8th grade, granted messing around and never did in game, but it was a legit no traveling dunk.

I don't know any current 7th graders and admit this isn't something happening all the time, but I've seen this story on several sites now today and am a bit thrown off on just how much press it has gotten because like I said, I've gotta believe there are other kids out there that can do it as well??  I could always be wrong though.

ya. the rest of the video shows him in warmups dunking with two hands pretty smoothly. there' a big difference between "grabbing rim" and throwing down in traffic in a game. but i agree too, this doesn't make him the next big thing, he's just an early bloomer

I just wanna make sure everyone is clear that I do realize the major difference between grabbing rim and dunking.  Liek I said though, in my mind, if I of all people could get rim, then there are plenty out there that could've/were/are dunking

duly noted, there probably are more out there they just aren't hyped like this; i agree it is annoying. i'll never forget this guy i played against in 8th grade...was like 6'4''/210, had a beard, I couldn't believe someone in 8th grade could be so developed, just shows the range of physical development you see in middle school and high school too.

Marquette's own Jimmy Butler was just 20 at the start of the semester this year......would have made him a 17 year old freshman albeit for just a couple of weeks.

really a dum post even tho i have the intial poster blocked.  go to many "AAu" tourneys and there are kids dunkin...I worked with a 7th grade team last year and saw many.  Saw one kid dunk on a drop step move off a power dribble... that one was impressive
