At least students will always have the Annex to drink at!

Don't forget how great the food was at the Annex. Those wings ruined a handful of my nights. Then I remembered never to go there EVER again.

And the service was so great!

per onmilwaukee.com:

Mary Pat Pfeil, senior director of university communication at Marquette, provided me with a bit more detail via e-mail.
"The university was recently approached about the purchase of Angelo's due to the owner's plan to retire, and there is an accepted offer to purchase the property. The property, which includes Marquette Gyros, is the only property on the south side of Wells Street between 16th and 17th not currently owned by the university. The Office of Administration is in conversations with various parties regarding the operation of the business. The operator of Marquette Gyros will continue to lease that space. Because the closing on the real estate transaction has not occurred, no other details are available at this time."

You know what the underlined portion means - FOOTBALL STADIUM!!!!

In my 3 years at SLU Law, there are only two on-campus bars, and really only two on-campus eating establishments. Everyone goes off-campus for everything, and everyone has their own favorite places. The end result was a splintering of the university community. It's something I would not aspire for Marquette to have.

Yeah, but SLU is also in St. Louis, which makes it suck by default.  I live in St. Louis, and St. Louis blows.

I am from St. Louis, currently living in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee wins this battle, easily.

Angelo's was good pizza late 70s.  Didn't go there much after that.

It was more fun to watch the dine and dash.  We'd sit on the 10th floor of Mc Cormick and watch.  Waitresses built like Clay Matthews and just as fast would come flying out the door chasing the dashers.  Painful tackles.

Ya, and the two bars left really suck, unless you enjoy listening to lady gaga and kesha on repeat all night. And drinking beer from uncleaned tap lines.

When did you graduate?? If you are still in school, you must not like Murphy's because you do not drink heavily at bars or before you go out and Caffrey's because the girl who tutored you in [insert class name here], who turned you down, held a post study session Q&A there or worked there or something.

For campus bars... they get the job done in spades.

I don't understand all the hate for Murphs and Caff's.  Of course we each have our favorites (Murphs by a mile), but they are both pretty good college bars.  Me and my friends had plenty of great times at Murphs... from Big Ass Beer Wednesday with Karoke, to Tuesday afternoons playing NTN for pitchers of Icehouse, to CMFs on Saturday night.  Having a mug card was essential as well.  We even convinced Ken (the manager at the time, 03-04 era) to put one of our home made mix CD's in the jukebox, and we played that damn thing to death.  At first everyone loved it, then after a few weeks everyone hated it.  Great times.

There used to be a "Pop-a-shot" and Golden tee in the bard...  I haven't been there in a while.

You definitely haven't been to Murph's in a long time. The place you're describing actually sounds like it has character.

I graduated in 08, and even then Murphs and Caffs had no character. No decent deals due to campus monopoly and bartenders who wouldn't even hold a conversation with you (with a couple notable exceptions, mostly at Caffs). I especially loathed murphys..the only time any of us went there was at 1:45 to find someone to hook up with.

You want to get drunk... go to murphy's. Sounds like you want to go to a bar and sip your drinks while telling yours and hearing the bartenders life story. You want character... go to a corner bar.

The good bartenders at Caffs were the ones who had been there awhile. They seem to be getting phased out though. I finished undergrad in '07 and agree with your general assessment.

I knew Caffs was going to take a turn for the worse when they did the useless remodeling...

Yes, I was quite surprised with the DJ booth.  I enjoyed Caffreys, and Jim and Turk (IIRC) were both good guys behind the bar.  (00-02)

Sad - many happy memories there. Pies were good in late 60's.

ugh, I'm surprised by all the defending of Muphs and Caffs. I thought it was widely agreed that they get the job done in absolute pinch if you happen to be drinking on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or are looking for a familiar face at 1:45 after going downtown but thats about it.  Why are they such great bars to "get drunk in"? They aren't cheap. They don't have good corners to park you and your best 5 friends asses in all night to get tanked.  Music is so loud you can't hear anything, but there also is nowhere to dance (if thats your style). And youre looking at the same 20 people every night.  They're like a buffalo wild wings without the food or tv's.

I'll explain this to you. Caffs and Murphs are not cheap. I don't know the last time you were there, but they have both jacked up their prices considerably this year. The only way to show up is at near blackout drunk status. It is much cheaper to drink downtown. For example, dollar mug night is now 2 dollar mug night. Now, 2 dollars for a 12 ounce mug of shitty keystone light is a horrible drink deal. How they trick students into this "special" is beyond me. Not to meantion, on the same night you have great deals downtown such as Loucilles - free cover, 1 dollar pints, 1 dollar shots all night. OGBH - half off everything all night. Ale house - 2 dollar pints of good crap all night. Trinity - 1 dollars pints all night. And so on.... And the double your dough deal now sucks too. It gets done at 11, even though the sign clearly says "Drink specials good untill 12 or 1!" Who wants to stop drinking at 11? The only decent deal left is the 4 beers for 5 dollars bucket. And dont even get me started on the music.

What the above poster said about murphs is dead on... you only show up if its after 1, and your desperate for a hookup.

Now, about the girls. You do know girls exist outside of the MU campus, right? In fact, the girls downtown put the girls at caffs/murphs to shame. Try getting out of the campus bubble sometime, and you might bring home a girl that really makes your roommates jealous.

+1.  I avoided those places like the plague unless it was late and I was getting back from downtown or an odd weeknight.  Caffrey's was slightly better but both pretty much sucked.  I prefer to get drunk where I don't have to stand up the whole time and fight through a crowd to move, where I can actually hear people speak and they can hear me, and where my drinks come at reasonable prices.  And before the 1:30 rush from downtown only the ugliest girls would frequent campus bars.

This and student night at the German Beer Hall were both fun and trouble for me and my kin.

Canned Goods n Ammo

That's too bad.

The on-campus bars used to have a cool college corner bar feel back in 00-03.

In fact, these were the days before everybody had a cell phone (gasp), so Murphs, Heg's, Gym Bar/Caff's all ended up being gathering places for people to meet up.

We'd hit house parties, or go downtown, but ultimately end up at a campus bar to catch up with the rest of our friends.

Also, it was nice to just stop for a pint/mug after studying. You didn't have to be dressed up, you could just stop in. It was about seeing who was around as much as it was about the bar itself.

Maybe twitter, four square, and facebook have changed this type of neighborhood bar type of thing. You can just check your phone and see where everybody is. You don't need to have a "meet-up" type of bar anymore.

+1.  Right on all fronts... incredibly loud, somehow no seating and no place to move around.   Caffs was pretty much only fun you were already drunk AND really wanted to play that arcade basketball game.

Agreed.  Back in those days, leaving campus to go to a bar was something you only did in search of free booze or if no one you knew was throwing a house party.  The notion of not going to those places until 1:45 is completely foreign to me.

I'm guessing the remodeling at both places over the last few years has completely changed the atmosphere.  And with the death of Hegarty's(again) and the Gloc, there just isn't much reason to stay on campus.

Spot on.  Was there from 98-02.

Also experienced those new prices this past year, went to Murphs in the AM before a MU game, a 4 pitchers of Lite and a few bloody marys, were like $49.

Annex still have cheap beer?

Yep, right along with their great food and service.  #1 joint in Milwaukee.
