Angelo's owner retiring & asked MU to purchase. Gyros will continue to lease. MU working on operator for pizza business.

Saw a guy pee on the floor once when the line was too long to get to the bathroom. That was probably one of my favorite Angelo's moments.

Also I heard they got 3 million for the place!!!!!!!!

When was this?

It might have been me...

Couldn't decide which snarky comment to post:

Just what we need! More Marquette dominated campus presence in bars/restaurants!

I sure hope the Caffs/Murphs monopoly man owner will be interested!!!!!

McMARQthy

Have heard rumors all night and all day today. Seems to be legit based on the information I've gotten. Then again this might be a "save Ferris" type of situation. This deal also affects gyros as well. Have heard that blo's will be closing on thurs night.

jaybilaswho?

I would think that Gyro's is next one the hit list as MU really cant put any sort of school/admin builind in Blo's footprint alone. They would need Gyro's lot in order put something of size and use for the school. Unless MU is actually trying to put in another pizza joint. Does the quote mean that MU is taking over the Blo's pizza business or putting in a new pizza place?

I only ate at Angelos one time during my Marquette stay.

Me and Mrs. TallTitan34 went in for dinner one night.  We were the only people in the entire place aside from the staff.

On the TVs, they had ESPN with the unconfirmed report that Tom Crean had signed a deal with IU.  As we watched and learned Crean did in fact bolt to Indiana, a cop walked in demanding to see someone in the back.  As he waited he began shining his flashlight in the bottles of alcohol.  A man then ran out of the place from the back and the cop pursued on foot.

All in all a very memorable single time at blows.

Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

Didn't we hear the "owner is retiring" story when MU bought The Gloc and Ziggy's?  And how soon did those places close?

Or this could be a situation akin to the Avalanche, where it survives a few years under MU's supervision/designated operator, then closes down in a few years.

MU could put up some sort of building there; however, it's a very, very small parcel of land between Angelo's and Gyros, and for anything meaningful to possibly be built there, I think MU would have to take down that entire block.

This is one of those where I genuinely have no idea what will happen, but given MU"s track record, I think it'll end up going the way of one of the two above situations.

ate at angelo's this summer.  pizza and motz sticks are still awesome.  beer tasted worse than it did 10-15 years ago.  flat and stale.

The mozz sticks were amazing, but the secret was the marinara sauce you dipped them in.  The pizza was also underrated.

But the crux of the issues, obviously, is where will the underagers drink now?  Won't somebody think of the children????

I'm really sad to see angelo's close, i loved their pizza and pitcher deal

I won't miss it.   I may have been there once since I hit 21.  I do feel bad for the freshman/sophs of now and the future though.

The officer shining his flashlight into the bottles of alcohol was not just Angelo's. They did the same thing to Murphy's and Caffrey's. They do that occasionally to check that the bottles get clean and not have a bunch of fruit flies in them, etc. They are also checking to be sure that bottles are not premixed to far in advance.

As for the guy running out of the place... take your pick of reasons.

I am sorry but back in my day 79-83 Angelos was simply terrible.  They must have improved dramatically to have survived for so long but then again we would eat anything in college.  I remember a deep dish place down at Wells & 17th that I think was call Skis.  Great deep dish pizza but it was unfortunately closed for multiple health violations.  I always wondered how it was cited when Real Chilli next door escaped.  Oh well, the area has been gentrified beyond words since the days of the Gym, Ardmore, OD's et al.  I guess the idea is to remove any trace of character.

Fullodds

I only ate at Angelos once.  That was enough.  I ordered from Lucci's about 3 times a week in '84 and once a week thereafter.  Look for MU to either bring in a national pizza chain to run the spot or take over the space for some other restaurant.

Angelo's lasagna sticks are the best...not on the menu...but if you ask for them they will make it. Its lasagna in the form of a mozz stick...can't beat it. Pizza was so-so. We usually went to Sal's for pizza once it opened up (2040 W. Wisconsin).

We always went to Blows to drink my freshman year (04-05)...switched over to Hegarty's my sophomore year but still went to Blows occasionally until I turned 21. Heg's and Blows were the best bars for underagers. No real surprise that MU has moved to shut both of them down.

Best story I can think of is when my 19 year old roommate ran out of there at bar close with a full pitcher of beer in each hand, and proceeded to chug them on the corner of 16th and wells.

I really hope MU does try to keep it open, even if its a regulated, sanitized version. Its kind of a legendary place amongst older MU alums, and really the last of its kind after Hegarty's closed.

Best on campus for of-agers too...

They already have Papa Johns 2 doors down.

Even though angelos was a freshman bar, it was still nice to go there and get a drink once and while.

Great now we only have 2 on campus bars. I hope now alumni realize why kids go downtown to drink. MU better put anther bar there because Murphs and Caffs aren't enough.

Ya, and the two bars left really suck, unless you enjoy listening to lady gaga and kesha on repeat all night. And drinking beer from uncleaned tap lines.

Plus, the walk to water street/3rd ward really isn't that far, especially when the Marquette 'limo' service takes you to 6th and wells.

Don't think I went to blows very often. Drank their once. Ate their once. Pizza was good.

Gonna have to dust off my old idea of starting a bar called Red Door (in memory of my Thursday night drinking spot when I was a freshman) Cheap Beer, bad music, wet floors and free vodka shots. Anyone want to bankroll that?

Nah, the cost of constantly keeping the floor wet would be prohibitive.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I've heard MU bought it for 3 million from several different people...

Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

Never really went to Angelo's. Their pizza was kinda sloppy and as I recall, not that great. Maybe I didn't give them a fair shot. (I love the Shuttle). I'm not too torn up, but sad to see it go because it's part of the character of campus the same way Heg's was.

Now, if Gyros or Real Chili gets forced up, that's when I clear out the closet looking for my pitchfork and torch. Because moves like this to sterilize campus end up turning Marquette into SLU.

In my 3 years at SLU Law, there are only two on-campus bars, and really only two on-campus eating establishments. Everyone goes off-campus for everything, and everyone has their own favorite places. The end result was a splintering of the university community. It's something I would not aspire for Marquette to have.
