The whole article makes no sense.  I don't know how he sees a perceived link to Pearl's problems.  It was just reported, and the UWM section was probably the most logical place to put it.

I think he was trying to make a point about things being impossible to prove.  I think it is complete BS, but who knows if there was malice intended.  If anything, it was probably Wes Matthews at the pro-am with a nice car.

cheebs09

If Wesley Matthews bought another nice car I will never cheer for him again.

I think it was more saying that you can't necessarily prove rumors just because someone might say it. For example, you can't really prove that Pearl cheated at UWM just because he cheated at Tennessee. I don't know reading what I just wrote doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but then again neither does the article, just trying to take a stab at what this guy was saying. I think it was a pretty irresponsible comment, but you can tell the author isn't too fond of MU or UW with previous comments in the article.

I'm pretty sure I've seen players driving around campus and it is not usually in a car one that would draw someone to the conclusion they are getting paid. Seemed more like a typical college kid's car. If a player was in a car like that, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that it is a relative or something. We have a few guys from the area on the team.

One correction to the article. Marquetter fans do not prefer UWM to be a division II program. In our mines they are.

Clam Crowder

Even if someone did drive out of the Pro-Am with a Mercedes CLK and I am pretty sure it was Butler cuz I have seen him driving it around and near Humphrey who says the kid doesn't have wealthy family or saved up his money for a long time for it. I don't see what this guys point is

I don't think any of them are dumb enough to give a CLK to a borderline second round pick.

Clam Crowder

Thats what I am saying... it's just a car...I don't get what he is trying to get at

I think the point is, nothing can be proven.

Just because Bruce cheated at UT, doesn't mean it's safe to assume he cheated at UWM.

Just because X MU player was driving a nice car (allegedly), doesn't mean he's being paid or receiving anything illegally.

The writer is a little too defensive for his own good. I agree that Pearl doesn't have much to do with UWM anymore... but what section is the JS supposed to put this under? And who even cares about the "section"? anyways?

MUfan12

I wonder if they have a psych class there dedicated to developing wicked inferiority complexes. It's a common theme I've seen from just about everyone I know that went there.

Same has been said about Marquette fans.

MerrittsMustache

This is the type of article where, if you didn't think Pearl cheated at UWM, you probably do now based solely on how defensive this writer gets about absolutely nothing. A better way of going about expressing his displeasure with the article being included in the UWM "section" would have been to write a satirical, light-hearted, "Don't associate us with that cheater" type of article. Then again, we wouldn't be talking about this writer if that was the case and since he writes a second-rate blog for a school without much of a fanbase, he has to occasionally write some ridiculous things in order to get noticed. So...mission accomplished!

Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

How about his gem of an idea for an UWM-themed sports bar on North Avenue?  Apparently, he's not a fan of seeing Marquette and UW-Madison flags outside of bars on the East Side.

One of the things I hate most about driving down Locust is seeing the Marquette and Wisconsin logos on Tracks Tavern flags at the corner of Locust and Humboldt.  It boils my blood to know that this sports bar is all about two schools that have nothing to do with the neighborhood, yet there's a perfectly good Division I university that operates just over the river.

Yup...those UWM-North Dakota St. women's hoops games viewing parties on a Tuesday night in January will really pack those commuter students in.

This is even better:  the Marquette "rivalry" page.  MUFan12 is onto something...there is something in the curriculum up in Shorewood.  I can't resist after reading this one.

"Watching the Panthers keep up with a Big East team so well in the 2008-09 season really clinched and excited the fans for the rest of the year. Hopefully we are able to host a game in the future and show Marquette what Milwaukee fans are capable of. The rivalry with our neighboring school has quickly turned into a tradition that I hope lasts a lifetime. I know my extreme dislike for MU will!"–April Schauer, Milwaukee Cheerleader

Uh, April...you lost that game 100-80.  And this "rivalry" has about as much tradition to it as the "memorabilia" hanging on the wall at the Bayshore Applebee's.

I wonder if this game will lose even more importance as Buzz continues more of a national recruiting strategy rather than a local one.  I can't imagine guys like Lazar Hayward, Dominic James, Jimmy Butler, or DJO really care that much about it.

All-in-all, though, I guess I am glad we play UWM.  Gives a little more to talk about in November and December.

ZiggysFryBoy

wonder why the auther didn't comment on 4never rolling down wells in his '81 chevy citation?

MarkCharles

I am honestly just shocked to find out that there is actually a Panther blog. The school has so little to be proud of in sports, and hardly any student support. If there was any demand whatsoever for a UWM sportsbar, it would exist. There just simply isn't anyone asking for one.

This blogger should be ecstatic that this article was filed under the UWM section, because it reminds people that.....
A: The UWM basketball team actually exists
B: There was once an era, the Bruce Pearl era, where UWM bball was an up-and-coming mid-major
instead of the inconsequential program it is today.

And no, I will not call the school "Milwaukee". The city of Milwaukee doesn't deserve to be insulted like that

Chicago_inferiority_complexes

Chicos, he was just following the lead of his antagonist the JS and making crap up.

Reading between the lines on my favorite poster ever over there.

The guy believes anything Marquette is dirty as can be, but is willing to give Pearl the benefit of the doubt? That's some solid entertainment.

"The Marquette – Milwaukee rivalry is one that seems to symbolize a city such as Milwaukee that few other college rivalries in the nation do. The rivalry is loud and boisterous but it is located only a few miles apart. One being a public institution and the other one private. Rich vs. poor, elites vs. the working class, over exposed vs. under appreciated, etc and so on. Whether it is men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball or men's and women's basketball, these cross town games seem to raise excitement amongst the fans and players even if its a down year for one program or both. This rivalry takes on more than just sports to it, it's one of an all-around everyday rivalry and one that tends to separate it from other college rivalries." – Derick Kelly, Klotsche Krazie

Oh lord.  Rich vs poor, over exposed vs underappreciated?  Give me a break.  I grew up in an affluent suburb and more kids from my HS went to UWM than Marquette and Madison combined.  But if you accumulate quotes from UWM blog posters, it has to be a prevailing sentiment nationally!

I'm sure that the author would be ecstatic to know that when I saw "Panther," I immediately thought it was about Pitt.

Imagine my 15 seconds of confusion as to why a Pitt fan was upset with the J-S.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
