But MU seems to have more questions, and more fundamental questions.  Relying on a PG that was injured last year...expecting freshment to make significant impacts...lack of size with experience....  This isn't just about a sixth man stepping into a starting role.

GTown has huge questions with their frontcourt. Lubick wont contribute much this year and Monroe is gone.

USF lost a prolific scorer in Jones.

Cincy lost Vaughn and Stephenson. Gates is good but who else?

Louisville lost its top 3 scorers and the incoming class isnt that great.

Syracuse lost a center, a guard and a forward. Their zone wont be nearly as effective with new players in it.

Everyone saw what a Gody-less ND team is like. They may surprise.

WVU lost Butler and Ebanks. No two freshmen can replace their production.

The battle for spots 3 - 8 shouls be interesting this year.

I've come to begrudgingly accept MU will not go back to Warriors, but never in a million years will I ('91 grad), or many others, ever identify MU with Golden Eagles. Even aside from not being Warriors, it's a lame name.  It's not original and doesn't seem to have any real connection with the school. Sorry, We are Marquette, but will never consider "us" the Golden Eagles.

+1.  The lowest prediction I've seen so far, but if you give the old farts their hard-on by dropping the Warriors name they wouldn't notice if he put us behind DePaul.

I don't get a "hard-on when I hear the Warriors name" but I am able to distinguish between a nickname that made us proud and our foes envious and one that makes us feel silly and engenders laughter and derision from our opponents.

I take it you're not.

Jesus, the warrior thing is so freaking lame.  We're the Golden Eagles, we're never going to go back to warriors.  Its time to move on and stop crying.

Why, then, is MU running away from the Golden Eagles name?  In reality, they are and I've heard it from many sources at the U that it's happening.  Sure, there is still some things you can buy for the PC young crowd that also believes Nike is evil and Haliburton killed John Lennon, but the university knows what sells and what doesn't.

It's remarkable to me that 15 years later how many people still bring it up on sports highlights, calling of games live, etc.   You don't seem people saying Redmen still for St. John's.  Or Indians for Stanford.

Sorry, not moving on and the fact that some people get cranky about us old farts keeping it alive, all the better.

Agree completley. In fact, MU should just scrap the nickname completely and simply be Marquette. That will set us apart from everyone.

Why not change our nickname to go and then we could be "Go Marquette" ::)

The point is that because Jay Bilas mentions "warriors", nobody even pays attention to what he is actually saying because they are so excited about "warriors" (oops, I just got wood).

I don't really get what your getting at with this paragraph.  I don't believe any of those things, and even if I did, I don't think it would really mean that I'm trying to be PC.  I just happen to believe that its ridiculous that everyone here still is all worked up about the whole Warriors thing.  It happened 16 years ago.  We can move on now and stop talking about how awesome it was back when we had a really cool nickname.

I'm not sure if this is lamer than the debate of whether or not Crean was the Anit-Christ that shows up every other day.

It happened 16 years ago and came up again only a few years ago and is continually brought up every year....apparently a lot of people, including the media an sportscasters in this country haven't found a way to move on yet.

That is the kind of retarded logic that made us the "Gold." You wouldn't happen to be on that board would you 79?

Question --

Would everyone agree that most of the controversy would be silent if in 1994 or even 2004 Marquette had just gone back to the Hilltoppers? I think the Warrior people like myself would still prefer the Warriors, but I would still settle for a nickname that had some reference to Marquette's past, as opposed to an utterly generic nickname that Marquette shares with several other schools, including a fellow top ranked Catholic university.

Agreed.  I don't like it like I like the Warriors, but it's infinitely better than Golden Beagles or The Gold.

Sorry folks. I aint no damn Golden Eagle!

I AM A WARRIOR!!!

That's right. The University can do what it wants with the name. Drag out a furry bird if you must. Design an Eagle that looks like a chicken hawk and share a nickname with a schools that serves Bubbas from Somewhere Down There, Mississippi.

The only way Marquette is going to get people to stop calling the university the Warriors is to have old alumni, well, die. They can do the Catholic thing and order it, but like birth control, nobody listens and nobody respects them for it.

Oh by the way, O'Hara Hall, if we all die, that leaves you with lots of young alums and that doesn't do much for your alumni giving now, does it.

I AM A WARRIOR!

O' Hara Hall is no longer used...Zilber has replaced it

Hilltoppers or Golden Avalanche would have been great, but instead the head of MU at the time (and an MU grad to boot) wanted Golden Eagles.

GTown has huge questions with their frontcourt. Lubick wont contribute much this year and Monroe is gone.

1) Georgetown still returns everyone but 1 player and 4 out of 5 starters. Not denying Greg monroe's loss will be felt, but it's just one player on a roster while marquette loses 3 starters.
2) We still have our starting Center in Julian Vaughn who's gotten better every year he's been at Georgetown. Yes he was the center doesn't matter what the box score says.
3) Why don't you think Lubick will contribute much this year? He is a top 50 recruit. He's scrappy and has a nose for the ball. he's exactly what Georgetown needs. I saw him play in the summer league this year there's no reason he can't get minutes and contribute.
4) Our front court won't be as talented as last year, but this year we'll have more depth with the addition of Lubick and Moses abraham who are both rebounding machines. They'll compliment, Vaughn and Sims. Despite being skinny at 6'8" Hollis thompson will probably see some time at the 4 as well.
5) Across the board Georgetown has more depth this year than last bringing in 4 players and only losing 1. We have the best back court in the league ( arguably)

I'm quoting this post for no other reason than to identify a basketball-related post that I found while scrolling through a million posts from old timers about how awesome it would be if they changed the name back to warriors.  Get. Over. It.

I think Crowder will have more of an impact than people think this year and will be a solid contributor in our perpetually thin frontcourt.  I think we will end up better than 10th, but its hard to argue with Bilas' logic.  Sorry for getting off the topic though.

Also I think "+1" posts are a waste of space.  There I said it.
