There's a lot of focus on Marquette recruiting Wisconsin on this (and other) board. It got me thinking about Wisconsin prep players. Who is the best player to come out of Wisconsin?

Latrell Sprewell? Isn't Caron Butler from Kenosha/Racine?
We Are Marquette

Best shooter: Steve Novak

Overall, not sure.  Plus the athlete has changed physically so it's hard to compare the early to mid 20th century athlete to today's version.

The buzz around Sam Okey was unreal in this state,  put up huge numbers in high school.

Racine - yes.  I think he went to both Case and Park.

I don't know why you are "LOL-ing."  Joe Wolf was the best prep basketball player to come out of the state of Wisconsin and it really isn't close.  As for the most successful NBA player to come out of Wisconsin, it would be Downtown Freddie Brown.

Sort of depends upon how you are defining best.  Is it NBA career?  Prep Career? College Career?  What combination is the best?

Terry Porter wasn't much of a player in high school, and didn't play D1 college ball.  But he played 16 years in the NBA and was a two time All Star.  Sprewell was only in Wisconsin for two years of high school, and didn't really blossom until he got to Alabama.  But he had more points than any other NBA player from the state.  Butler wasn't exactly a great player in high school because he had so many off the court problems that he had to leave the state to finish school.  But he was great in college and very good in the pros.

In the end, looking at the whole body of work it's got to be Freddie Brown.  Perhaps the best prep player on the best prep teams in state history.  All American at Iowa.  NBA All Star.  NBA Champion.  13 year NBA career.  The only other player that was as good at each level is John Johnson, who played with Brown in college and the NBA.  None of the other guys excelled at every level.

Blackhat

For us youngsters, what pulled Fred Brown and John Johnson to Iowa?

groove

Those Milwaukee Lincoln teams of '66 and '67 may have been the best High School teams in Wisconsin history.

John Johnson pulled Fred Brown to Iowa while Brown was at a JUCO.  Not sure what brought Johnson to Iowa.

The JS compiled an all-time state basketball team back in 2005.

wow, was reading that list and saw Mickey Crowe's name. Remember that ball hog?

Gotta agree with Freddy Downtown Brown. He averaged over 27 ppg for a tough hawkeye squad.  Here's an article on his career in college and the NBA:

I had to laugh when I saw the coach at my old high school on that list...Jim Stevens at Madison West.  The year after he retired, after getting upset in the State playoffs as usual, his longtim e assistant took them to three state championships in four years, winning it once.

Its true. Hes legit
He's very good but let's not crown him as the best prep player ever to come out of Wisconsin before he has stepped foot on a college campus to play.

MedicineHatSpanker

This is BS. Where is Terrel Schlundt? Where is Big Dean Marquardt? And why did Mickey Crowe's dad not get any votes for coach?

Check out the pics of Mickey - then and now. Shocking. The years have not been kind to The Mick. Then again, he was no bargain during his glory days at JFK Prep.

More outrage! Where is Kurt Nimphius? Where is Mike Jost? I question the validity of this poll. Something is rotten in Denmark, WI!

MedicineHatSpanker

The final indignity: Ron Glaser was justly recognized by Johnny Glaser has been snubbed! Now I know this poll is bogus! How can any of us sit idly by when our own JG/Murffius/Red Baron/Gr8t1 is slapped in the face? I for onw cannot and I submit most share my sense of outrage!
